DTC P0705: Park/Neutral Position Switch

  1. Check Power Circuit  - Turn ignition off. Disconnect inhibitor switch wiring harness connector. See Figure. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between inhibitor switch connector terminal No. 3 (Green/Black wire) and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair harness or connectors as necessary.
  2. Check Output Signal Circuit  - Turn ignition off. Disconnect park/neutral position relay harness connector. See Figure. Check continuity between park/neutral position relay harness connector terminal No. 1 (Red/Green wire) and inhibitor switch connector terminals No. 7 and 9. See Fig 1. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair harness or connectors between ECM and relay.
  3. Leave ignition off. Disconnect ECM wiring harness connector. Check continuity between park/neutral position relay connector terminals No. 6 (Yellow/Purple wire) and ECM terminal No. 22. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair harness or connectors as necessary.
  4. Check Ground Circuit  - Leave ignition off. Loosen and retighten engine ground bolts. See Figure. Check continuity between engine ground and park/neutral position relay harness connector terminals No. 2 and 7 (Black wire). If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair harness or connectors between ECM and relay.
  5. Check Park/Neutral Relay  - Remove park/neutral relay. Check for continuity between relay terminals No. 6 and 7. See Fig 2. Continuity should not be present. Apply battery voltage and ground to terminals No. 1 and 2 of relay. Continuity should now exist between terminals No. 6 and 7.
  6. Check Inhibitor Switch  - Ensure inhibitor switch is not damaged or contaminated. Check inhibitor switch and ECM harness connectors for damage, corrosion or pushed-out pins. Repair if necessary. If no problems are found, turn ignition on. Using a voltmeter, check for battery voltage at A/T control unit connector as follows: See Figure.
    • With gear selector in Park or Neutral, battery voltage should be present at A/T control unit terminal No. 19.
    • With gear selector in Reverse, battery voltage should be present at A/T control unit terminal No. 20.
    • With gear selector in Drive, battery voltage should be present at A/T control unit terminal No. 18.
    • With gear selector in "2", battery voltage should be present at A/T control unit terminal No. 17.
    • With gear selector in "1", battery voltage should be present at A/T control unit terminal No. 16.

    In all other gear positions, voltage should be zero. If voltage is not as specified, replace inhibitor switch. If voltage is as specified, check ECM pins and terminals for damage and check connection of ECM harness connector. Reconnect ECM harness connector and retest.
