Differential Assembly: Disassembly
- Before disassembling differential, measure total preload. Rotate drive pinion in both directions several times to seat bearings. Measure preload with Preload Gauge (ST3127S000). Preload should be 12-28 INCH lbs. (1.4-3.2 N.m).
- Measure ring backlash at several points. Backlash should be 0.0039-0.0059" (0.100-0.150 mm). Measure ring gear runout. Runout limit is 0.002" (0.050 mm). Check tooth contact. See GEAR TOOTH CONTACT PATTERNS article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
- Using two 1.8" (45 mm) spacers, mount differential on Differential Fixture (KV38100800). Paint or punch reference marks on side bearing caps for reassembly reference.NOTE: During reassembly, ensure bearing caps are installed in their original positions.
- Remove side bearing caps. Lift differential case assembly out with Slide Hammer (HT72400000). Keep side bearing races together with bearings. DO NOT mix parts. Remove drive pinion nut. Pull off pinion flange.
- Remove drive pinion, pinion rear bearing, drive pinion height adjuster washer, bearing spacer, and adjuster washer as an assembly. See Fig 1 . Remove oil seal. Remove pilot bearing, spacer, and pinion front bearing. Remove side oil seal. Tap out pinion front and rear bearing races with brass drift.
- Carefully remove side bearings. To prevent damage to bearing, engage jaws of Puller (ST33061001) into grooves on differential case.NOTE: DO NOT mix removed parts. Keep bearings and races together as matched sets (left and right).
- Loosen ring gear bolts in crisscross pattern. Tap ring gear from differential case with soft-faced mallet. Loosen screws on differential cases "A" and "B". Separate differential cases "A" and "B." See Fig 1 .
