Fail-Safe System Check
Fail-safe system check monitors ASCD system for malfunctions. When a malfunction is sensed by ASCD control unit, cruise control operation is deactivated and CRUISE indicator light will flash on and off in 0.4 second intervals until fault is no longer present. The following conditions can cause a fail-safe system operation:
- Stuck steering wheel switch(es).
- Fault in power or ground circuit for vacuum motor.
- Fault in ground or power circuit for air valve.
- Fault in ground or power circuit for release valve.
- Faulty Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or VSS circuit.
- Faulty ASCD control unit.
- Faulty brake switch or brakelight switch.
NOTE:
Listed malfunctions will cancel set speed stored, except for a faulty cancel switch, ASCD brake switch, or brakelight switch. When ASCD switch is turned off, set speed stored is also cancelled.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Turn ASCD switch on. If CRUISE indicator light flashes, go to TEST 3: ASCD STEERING SWITCH CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. If CRUISE indicator light does not flash, go to next step.
- Turn ASCD switch off. Drive vehicle at a speed greater than 30 MPH and turn ASCD switch on. Push SET/COAST switch and observe CRUISE indicator light. If CRUISE indicator light flashes, go to next step. If CRUISE indicator light does not flash, go to step 4 .
- Perform TEST 5: ASCD PUMP CIRCUIT CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. If fault is still present, perform TEST 4: VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. If no problem was found during test procedures, replace ASCD control unit.
- Slowly depress brake pedal for at least 5 seconds. Observe CRUISE indicator light. If CRUISE indicator light flashes, perform TEST 2: ASCD BRAKE/BRAKELIGHT SWITCH CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. If CRUISE indicator light does not flash, system is okay at this time.
