Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure . Remove instrument cluster. Check continuity of Pink/Blue wire between instrument cluster harness connector M32 terminal No. 32 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 68. See Figure and Fig 1 . Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If problem is not found, go to step  3 .
  2. Check the following:
    • Check for poor connection at White, 18-pin harness connector F66 (on I35) or F68 (on Maxima) terminal No. 2 (Pink/Blue wire). See Figure . Connector is located under instrument panel. See Figure or Figure .
    • Check for open or short between instrument cluster and ECM.

    Repair as necessary.

  3. Reconnect all harness connectors. Check speedometer operation. If speedometer operates properly, go to step  7 . If speedometer does not operate properly, go to next step.
  4. On I35, go to next step. On Maxima, go to step  6 .
  5. On vehicles equipped with Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), check the following:
    • Check for poor connection at White, 20-pin connector M230 terminal No. 2 (Red wire). See Figure . Connector M230 is located under center of instrument panel. See Figure .
    • Check for poor connection at Gray, 8-pin connector F65 terminal No. 3 (Red wire). See Figure . Connector F65 is located on left side of engine compartment. See Figure .
    • Check for open or short between instrument cluster and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
    • Check for open or short between VSS, transmission control module and ECM.

On vehicles not equipped with VDC, check the following:

    • Check for poor connection at Super Multiple Junction (SMJ) connector M15 terminal 13D (Red wire). See Fig 2 . SMJ connector M15 is located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure .
    • Check for open or short between instrument cluster and ABS/TCS control unit.

On all vehicles, repair as necessary.

  6. Check the following:
    • Check for poor connection at Super Multiple Junction (SMJ) connector M15 terminal 13D (Red wire). See Fig 2 . SMJ connector M15 is located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure .
    • Check for open or short between instrument cluster and ABS/TCS control unit.
    • Check for open or short between instrument cluster and ground.

    Repair as necessary.

  7. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
