Ignition Switch (Start Signal): I35

  1. If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If not using CONSULT-II, go to step  3.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check START SIGNAL in DATA MONITOR mode with CONSULT-II under the following conditions. If ignition switch is in ON position, start signal should be OFF. If ignition switch is in START position, start signal should be ON. If results are as specified, then inspection is complete. If results are not as specified, go to step  4.
  3. Check voltage between ECM terminal No. 42 and ground under the following conditions. See Fig 1 and Figure . If ignition switch is in start position, battery voltage should exist. If ignition switch is in other positions, battery voltage should be about zero volts. If voltage is as specified, inspection is complete. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position, then turn it to start. If starter motor operates, go to next step. If starter motor does not operate, see appropriate STARTER article under ENGINE.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect 10-amp fuse. Inspect 10-amp fuse. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is faulty, replace 10-amp fuse.
  6. Disconnect ECM harness connector and ignition switch harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 42 and fuse block, ignition switch terminal No. 6. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step  8. If problem is found, go to next step.
  7. Check the following:
    • Harness connectors M229 and F66.
    • Fuse block (J/B) connectors M17 and E83.
    • Harness for open or short between ignition switch and ECM.

Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.

  8. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. Inspection is complete.
