Ignition Switch (Start Signal): Q45

  1. If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If not using CONSULT-II, go to step  3.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe START SIGNAL in DATA MONITOR mode. With ignition switch in ON position, START SIGNAL should be OFF. With ignition switch in START position, START SIGNAL should be ON. If operation is as specified, test is complete. If operation is not as specified, go to step  4.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 59 by backprobing. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. See Figure and Figure . With ignition switch in START position, battery voltage should exist. With ignition switch in any other position, about zero volts should exist. If voltage is as specified, test is complete. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position, then to START position. If starter operates, go to next step. If starter does not operate, repair starting system. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check fuse No. 14 (10-amp) located in fuse block No. 1 under left side of instrument panel. See Figure. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse.
  6. Ensure fuse is reconnected. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Disconnect ignition switch harness connector (connector M70). See Figure. Disconnect fuse block No. 1 connector M1. See Figure. Check continuity of Light Blue wire between ECM connector terminal No. 59 and ignition switch harness connector terminal No. 5. See Figure and Figure . See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also, check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step  8.
  7. Check the following:
    • Check for poor connection at Super Multiple Junction (SMJ) connector F105 terminal 12T (Light Blue wire).
    • Check for poor connection at fuse block No. 1 connector M1 terminal 8A (Light Blue wire).
    • Check for open or short between ignition switch and fuse block No. 1, or between ECM and fuse block No. 1.
    • Check for open or short between ECM and fuse block No. 1, or between ECM and fuse block No. 1.

    Repair as necessary.

  8. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
