Ignition Switch (Start Signal): QX4

  1. If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If not using CONSULT-II, go to step  3.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check START SIGNAL in DATA MONITOR mode with CONSULT-II under the following conditions. If ignition switch is in ON position, start signal should be OFF. If ignition switch is in START position, start signal should be ON. If results are as specified, inspection is complete. If results are not as specified, go to step  4.
  3. Check voltage between ECM terminal No. 42 and ground under the following conditions. If ignition switch is in START position, battery voltage should exist. If ignition switch is in any other position, battery voltage should be about zero volts. See Figure and Figure . See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If voltage is as specified, then inspection is complete. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position, then turn it to START position. If starter motor operates, go to next step. If starter motor does not operate, see appropriate STARTER article under ENGINE.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect 7.5-amp fuse. Inspect 7.5-amp fuse. If 7.5-amp fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is faulty, replace 7.5-amp fuse.
  6. Disconnect ECM harness and ignition switch harness connectors. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 42, ignition switch and fuse block. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step  8. If problem is found, go to next step.
  7. Check the following:
    • Harness connectors M32 and F23.
    • Fuse block (J/B) connectors M10 and E3.
    • Harness for open or short between ignition switch and fuse.
    • Harness for open or short between ECM and fuse.

Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.

  8. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. Inspection is complete.
