Vehicle-To-Vehicle Distance Control Mode Function
Function Description
The Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system is designed to maintain a selected distance from the vehicle in front of own vehicle and can reduce the speed to match a slower vehicle ahead.
The system decelerates the vehicle as necessary and if the vehicle ahead comes to a stop, the vehicle decelerates to a standstill.
This system should only be used when traffic conditions allow vehicle speeds to remain fairly constant or when vehicle speeds change gradually.
Vehicle moves into the traveling lane ahead or if a vehicle traveling ahead rapidly decelerates, the distance between vehicles may become closer because the ICC system cannot decelerate the vehicle quickly enough. If this occurs, the ICC system sounds a warning chime and blinks the system display to notify the driver to take necessary action.
The ICC system cancels and a warning chime sounds if the speed is below approximately 25 km/h (15 MPH) and a vehicle is not detected ahead.
The ICC system operates as follows:
- When there are no vehicles traveling ahead, the ICC system maintains the speed set by the driver. The set speed range is between approximately 30 and 144 km/h (20 and 90 MPH).
- When there is a vehicle traveling ahead, the ICC system adjusts the speed to maintain the distance, selected by the driver, from the vehicle ahead. If the vehicle ahead comes to a stop, the vehicle decelerates to a standstill. Once own vehicle stops, the ICC system keeps the vehicle stopped.
- When own vehicle is stopped for less than 3 seconds and the vehicle ahead begins to move, own vehicle will start moving again automatically.
- When own vehicle is at a standstill for more than 3 seconds and the vehicle ahead begins to accelerate, push the RES+ switch or lightly depress the accelerator pedal. The ICC system starts to follow the vehicle ahead.
- When the vehicle traveling ahead moves to a different traveling lane, the ICC system accelerates and maintains vehicle speed up to the set speed.
Operation Description
Quickly push (less than 1.5 seconds) and release the ProPILOT Assist switch ON.
The status of the ProPILOT Assist system is displayed in the information display and, ProPILOT Assist system is set to a standby state.
ADAS control unit performs the control as per the following:
|
Constant speed |
Comparing the set vehicle speed with the current vehicle speed, transmit the command to ECM via CAN communication to reach the set vehicle speed, and controls the electric throttle control actuator. |
|
Following |
The ADAS control unit transmits signal to the ECM and the ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit) and controls the vehicle speed for keeping the proper distance between vehicles according to the vehicle speed changes of the vehicle ahead. |
|
Following to stop |
When the vehicle ahead decelerates to stop, own vehicle decelerates to a standstill. Once own vehicle stops, the ICC system automatically applies the brakes to keep the vehicle stopped. |
|
Starting from stop to following |
When own vehicle is stopped and the vehicle ahead begins to accelerate, push the RES+ switch or lightly depress the accelerator pedal. The ICC system starts to follow the vehicle ahead.
NOTE:
When own vehicle stops for less than 3 seconds, own vehicle will automatically follow the vehicle as it accelerates from a stop

Set Condition
Under a standby state, pushing down the SET- switch will start system control.
- When vehicle speed is between approximately 30 km/h and 144 km/h (20 MPH and 90 MPH).
- When vehicle speed is below approximately 32 km/h (20 MPH) if the vehicle ahead is detected. The set vehicle speed becomes 30 km/h (20 MPH).
If the system is canceled by conditions 1-6 below, the system will resume control at the last set cruising speed by pushing up the RESUME + switch.
- When the SET - switch is pushed under the following conditions, the system cannot be set and the set vehicle speed indicator will blink for approximately 2 seconds:
- When traveling below 30 km/h (20 MPH) and the vehicle ahead is not detected.
- When the selector lever is not in the "D" position or manual mode.
- When the parking brakes are applied.
- When the brakes are operated by the driver.
- When the SET - switch is pushed under the following conditions, the system cannot be set and a warning chime will sound and displays the causes in combination meter (information display):
- When the VDC is OFF. (To use the ICC system, turn ON the VDC system, push the MAIN switch to turn OFF the ICC system and reset the ICC system by pushing the MAIN switch again.)
- When ABS or VDC (including the TCS) operates.
- When the wheel is slipping. (To use the ICC system, make sure the wheels are no longer spinning, push the MAIN switch to turn OFF the ICC system and reset the ICC system by pushing the MAIN switch again.)
Cancel Conditions
The following are conditions in which the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system may be temporarily unavailable. In these instances, the ICC system may not cancel and may not be able to maintain the selected following distance from the vehicle ahead.
- When CANCEL switch is pressed.
- When brake pedal is depressed.
- When the vehicle ahead is not detected below the speed of 25 km/h (15 MPH).
- When the selector lever is not in the "D" position or manual mode.
- When the parking brakes are applied.
- When the system judges the vehicle is at standstill.
- When VDC (including the TCS) operates.
- When the MAIN switch is turned OFF.
- When a wheel slips.
- When the VDC is turned OFF.
- When the system malfunction occurs.
