No-Load Circuit Check

  1. Disconnect wire from alternator terminal "B" and connect it to negative lead of an ammeter. Connect ammeter positive lead to alternator terminal "B". Start and operate engine at 1900 RPM. Amperage on circuit tester should indicate less than 10 amps. If amperage is larger than specified, replace IC regulator.
  2. Connect positive lead of voltmeter to terminal "B" of alternator. Negative lead of voltmeter to ground. Operate engine at 1900 RPM. Voltage should be within 14.2-14.8 volts. If voltage is less than specified, insert a test lead in access hole and ground terminal "F" of IC regulator. Start engine and check voltage reading of alternator terminal "B".
  3. If voltage is larger than specified, replace IC regulator. If voltage is less than specified, alternator is defective.
