Ignition Timing

  1. Check ignition timing with engine at normal operating temperature. Set parking brake. Place transmission in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T) position.
  2. On I-Mark, if vehicle is equipped with power steering, front wheels should be facing straight ahead.
  3. On all models, connect tachometer. Connect timing light to either No. 1 or No. 4-cylinder. Turn off all accessories and A/C (if equipped).
  4. On I-Mark, disconnect and plug both distributor vacuum advance hoses. On Amigo and Pickup, disconnect distributor vacuum advance hose.
  5. On all models, start engine. Check ignition timing. See the IGNITION TIMING  specifications table.
  6. If timing is out of adjustment, loosen distributor hold-down bolt and turn distributor in either direction until timing is within specification. After adjustment, retighten distributor hold-down bolt.
