Computerized Engine Controls: Notes

NOTE: The CHECK ENGINE light is now referred to as Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). The MIL is displayed in instrument cluster as CHECK ENGINE. Electronic Control Module (ECM) may also be referred to as Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This is the same component.

Computerized engine control system monitors and controls engine operation. Input sensors supply information to an Electronic Control Module (ECM). ECM processes information from input devices and sends output signals to various control devices. See INPUT DEVICES  and OUTPUT SIGNALS  . Information received from input devices is processed by ECM to calculate proper fuel delivery, ignition timing, fuel pressure, fuel evaporative purge, exhaust gas recirculation and air injection.
