Fuel Injector Coil Test
- Perform On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK in BASIC TESTING article. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
- Connect scan tool. Check engine coolant temperature. If coolant temperature is less than 50°F (10°C) or greater than 95°F (35°C), go to step 3). If temperature is between 50-95 degrees (10-35 C), go to step 6).
- Turn ignition off. Relieve fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE. Connect Fuel Injector Tester (J 39021) to battery positive and ground. Set amperage supply selector switch to Coil Test 0.5 amp position. Connect tester to a fuel injector. Set DVOM to tenths scale. Ensure temperature is with specified limits. Press PUSH TO START TEST button on tester.
- Observe lowest voltage reading after first second of test (Voltage may rise during test). Repeat test for each fuel injector. Identify highest voltage reading recorded other than those above 9.5 volts. Subtract any other voltage reading recorded from highest voltage reading. Repeat for all remaining fuel injectors. If any fuel injector had a value that resulted from subtraction greater than specified value of 0.6 volts, go to step 4). If all injectors voltage readings were within specifications, go to FUEL INJECTOR BALANCE TEST.
- Replace malfunctioning fuel injector(s). See FUEL RAIL & FUEL INJECTORS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION. Check fuel injector balance. See FUEL INJECTOR BALANCE TEST.

If any fuel injector had large fluctuations in voltage that did not stabilize or readings outside 5.6 - 6.5 volts, go to step 7). If all injectors voltage readings were within specifications, go to FUEL INJECTOR BALANCE TEST.
