Static Timing
- Loosen control cable screw at injection pump and turn control cable clevis pin 1/4 turn to disengage cold start system control. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 revolutions and align camshaft and injection pump sprocket timing marks with indexes on timing belt cover. See Fig 1 .
- Install TDC rod (Mot. 861) in crankshaft counter weight TDC slot. See Fig 2 . Remove screw plug located between 4 high pressure fuel outlets at rear of fuel injection pump. Remove copper washer. Install dial indicator support (Mot. 856) in place of screw plug. Insert dial indicator tip into support.
- Remove TDC rod from crankshaft counterweight TDC slot. Slowly turn crankshaft counterclockwise until dial indicator tip pointer stops moving. Zero dial indicator pointer. Slowly turn crankshaft clockwise until TDC rod can be inserted into TDC slot in crankshaft counterweight.
- At TDC, dial indicator pointer should indicate a piston lift travel of .031-.033" (.80-.84 mm). If fuel injection pump piston lift travel distance is not correct, pump piston must be adjusted.
- To adjust pump piston, loosen pump adjustment bolts. Observe dial indicator. To increase piston lift, rotate pump toward engine and then away from engine. To decrease piston lift, rotate pump away from engine.NOTE: Always adjust piston by rotating pump away from engine. This is normal direction of pump rotation. When increasing piston lift, rotate pump toward engine until piston lift is greater than specified tolerance and then rotate pump away from engine until correct piston lift is indicated on dial indicator.
- Tighten injection pump adjustment bolts. Remove TDC rod from crankshaft counterweight. Observe dial indicator and rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 complete revolutions until TDC rod can be inserted into crankshaft counterweight TDC slot.
- Dial indicator pointer should return to zero and then move to .031-.033" (.80-.84 mm). This will indicate that fuel injection pump static timing is correct. Remove TDC rod from crankshaft counterweight and install plug in cylinder block.
- Remove dial indicator and support tool. Install washer and screw plug in fuel injection pump. Connect high pressure fuel pipes to fuel injection pump and injectors. Engage cold start system control by returning clevis pin to its original position and tightening screw.
