All Models: Removal
- Disconnect battery negative cable. On models with A/T, disconnect shift rod at steering column shift lever.
- On Grand Wagoneer and Trucks with A/T and power brakes, place transmission in "LOW" (1) detent position to gain access to shift rod retaining clip at shift lever.
- Remove upper steering shaft to intermediate shaft "U" joint pinch bolt. DO NOT attempt to separate upper steering shaft and intermediate shaft at this point.
- On Grand Wagoneer and Trucks with A/C, remove left duct extension. On all models, remove steering column to instrument panel bezel. On Grand Wagoneer and Trucks, bezel screws are located behind lower bezel half.
- Remove bolts securing steering column mounting bracket to instrument panel. Remove bolts securing mounting bracket to steering column and remove bracket.CAUTION: Store bracket in a safe place to prevent damage to breakaway capsules.
- Remove upper and lower toe-plates. Disconnect wiring harness at ignition switch, removing black connector first.
- On models with cruise control, disconnect electrical connector. Separate steering shaft from intermediate "U" joint and remove steering column assembly.
CAUTION:
Handle steering column with care after removal. Blows on end of steering shaft or shift levers, leaning on column assembly, or dropping unit may cause damage to energy absorbing components.
