EEPROM Failure

NOTE: Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) diagnosis may require use of all spare keys.
  1. Ensure battery is fully charged. Using scan tool, read and record SKIM DTCs. Erase SKIM DTCs. Turn ignition off, then back to RUN position. After 3 minutes, read SKIM DTCs. If only EEPROM FAILURE fault message is currently displayed or was previously recorded, go to next step. If TRANSPONDER ID or RESPONSE MISMATCH fault message is displayed, go to step 3)  . If VIN MISMATCH & ROLLING CODE FAILURE fault message is displayed, test is complete. If VIN MISMATCH fault message is displayed, go to step 8)  .
  2. If EEPROM FAILURE fault message was previously recorded but did not reset after DTCs were erased, go to next step. If EEPROM FAILURE fault message is currently displayed, replace SKIM and perform SKIM INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE  .
  3. If EEPROM FAILURE fault message is not currently displayed with TRANSPONDER ID or RESPONSE MISMATCH fault message, go to next step. If only TRANSPONDER ID or RESPONSE MISMATCH fault messages are currently displayed, replace SKIM and perform SKIM INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE  .
  4. Using scan tool, erase SKIM DTCs. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Start engine 20 times. Using scan tool, read SKIM DTCs. If EEPROM FAILURE and TRANSPONDER ID fault message are displayed, replace SKIM and perform SKIM INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE  . If only EEPROM FAILURE fault message is currently displayed, go to next step. If only TRANSPONDER ID fault message is currently displayed, go to step 6)  . If neither fault message is currently displayed, test is complete.
  5. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, then SKIM. Select MISCELLANEOUS, then SKIM KEY TEST. Follow scan tool instructions. Test key in sentry key tester. If key passes, go to next step. If key does not pass, erase SKIM DTCs. Replace and program new key. See PROGRAMMING BLANK SMART KEY USING SCAN TOOL  .
  6. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, then SKIM. Select MISCELLANEOUS, then PROGRAM NEW KEY. Read status of current key. If scan tool displays PROGRAMMING SUCCESSFUL, test is complete. If display is PROGRAMMING FAILED, replace SKIM and perform SKIM INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE  . If display is MAXIMUM KEY LIMIT, no additional keys can be programmed. Perform VERIFICATION TEST: VER-2A If none of the above messages are displayed, replace SKIM and perform SKIM INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE  .
  7. Using scan tool, erase SKIM DTCs. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Start engine 20 times. Using scan tool, read SKIM DTCs. If EEPROM FAILURE fault message is displayed, replace SKIM and perform SKIM INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE  . If EEPROM FAILURE fault message is not displayed, go to next step.
  8. Start engine and allow to idle for 3 minutes. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If VIN MISMATCH fault message is displayed, go to next step. If ROLLING CODE fault message is displayed, go to step 13)  . If neither fault message is displayed, test is complete.
  9. Using scan tool, read VIN from Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If VIN output from PCM matches VIN on door jamb plate, go to next step. If VIN output from PCM does not match VIN on door jamb plate, replace PCM.
  10. Using scan tool, read VIN from SKIM. If VIN output from SKIM matches VIN on door jamb plate, go to next step. If VIN output from SKIM does not match VIN on door jamb plate, replace SKIM and perform SKIM INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE  .
  11. Using scan tool, erase VIN MISMATCH DTC. Turn ignition to RUN position and read SKIM DTCs. If VIN MISMATCH fault message is still present, replace SKIM and perform SKIM INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE  . If VIN MISMATCH fault message is not displayed, go to next step.
  12. Start engine and allow to idle for 3 minutes. Using scan tool, erase SKIM DTCs. Read SKIM DTCs. If SKIM MISMATCH fault message is still present, replace SKIM and perform SKIM INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE  . If SKIM MISMATCH fault message is not displayed, test is complete.
  13. Using scan tool, erase SKIM DTCs. Select THEFT ALARM, then SKIM. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, go to appropriate VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS test in VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS article. If scan tool does not display NO RESPONSE,
  14. Using scan tool, select BODY, then BODY COMPUTER. Select SYSTEM TEST, then PCM MONITOR. If scan tool displays PCM ACTIVE ON THE BUS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display PCM ACTIVE ON THE BUS, see appropriate VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS article.
  15. Using scan tool, select ENGINE, then read DTCs. If scan tool displays any PCM related DTCs, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If scan tool does not display any PCM related DTCs, replace smart key immobilizer module. Perform SKIM INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE  .
