Checking Park/Neutral Position Switch (A/T): Cherokee

  1. Apply parking brake. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, read Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch input state. Move gear selector in and out of Park and Drive while observing scan tool display. If display corresponds with gear selector position, system is functioning properly. Test is complete. If display does not correspond with gear selector position, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Place gear selector in Park. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. PCM is located in engine compartment on left front fender, near radiator support. Inspect connectors for damaged pins, corrosion and loose terminals. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 6 (Black/White wire) at PCM C1 connector. See Figure . Move gear selector in and out of Park and Drive while observing scan tool display. If resistance does not stay at less than 5 ohms at all times, go to next step. If resistance stays at less than 5 ohms at all times, repair short to ground in Black/White wire between PNP switch connector and PCM.
  3. Disconnect PNP switch connector. PNP switch is located on side of transmission. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose terminals. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, measure resistance of Black/White wire between PNP switch connector and terminal No. 6 at PCM C1 connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/White wire between PCM and PNP switch.
  4. Ensure ignition is off. Ensure PCM connectors are still disconnected. Reconnect PNP switch connector. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 6 (Black/White wire) at PCM C1 connector. See Figure . Move gear selector in and out of Park and Drive while observing resistance reading. If resistance switches from less than 5 ohms to more than 5 ohms, replace PCM. If resistance does not switch from less than 5 ohms to more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  5. At this time, PNP switch is assumed to be defective. Replace PNP switch.
