Chain And Sprockets, Timing: Inspection

Inspect the timing chain for excessive wear prior to removal.

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine while watching the timing chain tensioner plunger. When the plunger reaches its maximum extension, stop rotating the crankshaft.
Measure the distance from the tensioner body to the edge of the chain guide as shown in illustration (1).
If the distance (1) is greater than 20.5 mm (0.81 in.) inspect the chain guides for excessive wear.
If the chain guides are not excessively worn, replace the timing chain. Refer to CHAIN AND SPROCKETS, TIMING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
