Seal Cleaning
To make sure that the vehicle does not return due to residual leakage, the following procedure MUST be performed.
- Remove the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Replace the axle seal. Refer to SEAL, AXLE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONSEAL, INPUT SHAFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- After the outer seal has been replaced, clean the wet area in the PTU bore (inside and out) using a shop towel and brake cleaner and verify no residual oil is present.NOTE:
Make sure not to get any cleaning agent on the oil seal, this may cause premature failure of oil seal.
- Remove the 3 fasteners from the heat shield and remove the heat shield from the PTU.
- Using break cleaner and a shop towel, clean around the weep hole (2) and the PTU to transmission mating surface (1).
- Install the PTU and verify the coupler shaft remains seated during installation, (Refer to 21 - Transmission and Transfer Case/Power Transfer Unit/Installation).NOTE:
After the PTU is installed, stand under the vehicle, facing the front of the vehicle, and look in the weep hole with a light. If the coupler shaft is seated properly there will be a 1mm space between the coupler shaft splines and the right side of the weep hole. If there is no gap between the coupler shaft splines and the right side of the weep hole, remove the PTU and re-seat the coupler shaft.
- Clean and dry the heat shield thoroughly and install.NOTE:
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is visible under a black light. If available, use a black light to verify that there is no residual oil on the PTU, heat shield or transmission. If any residual oil is found, clean and dry thoroughly.
