Removal And Installation

REMOVAL 

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECTION .
  2. Remove the fuel tank. Refer to TANK, FUEL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  3. Disconnect the fuel supply and return line (1) quick connect fitting. Refer to FITTING, QUICK CONNECT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  4. Disconnect the fuel tank purge line (2) quick connect fitting. Refer to FITTING, QUICK CONNECT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
    NOTE:

    Prior to removing the fuel pump module, use compressed air to remove any accumulated dirt and debris from around fuel tank opening.

    CAUTION:

    An indexing arrow is located on top of the main fuel pump module to clock it's position into the fuel tank, note it's location for reassembly.

  5. Position the SAE Fuel Pump Lock Ring Wrench (special tool #9340, SAE Fuel Pump Lock Ring Wrench) into the notches on the outside edge of the lock ring.
  6. Install a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar into the SAE Fuel Pump Lock Ring Wrench (special tool #9340, SAE Fuel Pump Lock Ring Wrench).
  7. Rotate the breaker bar counterclockwise and remove the lock ring.
    CAUTION:

    Whenever the fuel pump module is serviced, the rubber O-ring seal must be replaced.

  8. Disconnect the tank lines (1) (2) from the fuel pump module while removing from the tank.
  9. Remove and discard the rubber O-ring seal.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION:

An indexing arrow is located on top of the main fuel pump module to clock it's position into the fuel tank. The fuel pump module must be installed in the same position as removed.

  1. Using a NEW  rubber O-ring seal, position the fuel pump module into the fuel tank opening while connecting the tank lines (1) (2).
  2. Position the lock ring over top of the fuel pump module.
  3. Rotate the fuel pump module until the embossed alignment arrow points to the center alignment mark or the same position as noted during removal. This step must be performed to prevent the float from contacting the side of the fuel tank.
  4. Install the SAE Fuel Pump Lock Ring Wrench (special tool #9340, SAE Fuel Pump Lock Ring Wrench) into the notches on the outside edge of the lock ring.
  5. Install a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar into the SAE Fuel Pump Lock Ring Wrench (special tool #9340, SAE Fuel Pump Lock Ring Wrench).
  6. Rotate the breaker bar clockwise until all seven notches of the lock ring have engaged.

  7. Connect the fuel return line and fuel supply quick connect fittings (1).
  8. Connect the fuel tank purge line (2).
  9. Install the fuel tank. Refer to TANK, FUEL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  10. Connect the negative battery cable(s). Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECTION .
  11. Fill the fuel tank.
  12. Start the engine and check for leaks at all fuel tank connections.
