2.4L Engine (Service Information): Removal
CAUTION:
If the original engine has experienced a catastrophic failure or an individual failure with the piston, cylinder bore, engine block, valve or valve seat, the intake manifold MUST be replaced with a new manifold.
- Perform the fuel pressure release procedure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
- Secure the steering wheel.
- Remove the steering coupler bolt (3). Position the shaft out of the way.
- Remove the engine cover (1) from the ball studs (2).
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING
.
- Remove the battery (2). Refer to BATTERY, REMOVAL .
- Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL
.
- Remove the PCM mount bracket bolts (2 & 4). Remove the bracket (3) from the battery tray (1).
- Disconnect the heater core supply (1) and return (2) hoses near the thermostat.
- Remove the nut (1) holding the wiring harness bracket and the nut (2) holding the ground cable to the top of the transmission.
- Separate the ground cable and the wiring harness bracket from the top of the transmission and position aside.
- Loosen the upper starter bolt (1) completely.NOTE:
The upper bolt will not back out completely due to lack of clearance. Leave the bolt in the bell housing.
- Remove the Power Distribution Center (PDC). Refer to CENTER, POWER DISTRIBUTION (PDC), REMOVAL
.
- Remove the radiator upper closeout panel push pins (2).
- Remove the radiator upper closeout panel bolts (4).
- Remove the radiator upper closeout panel bolts (3) and the closeout panel (1).
- Remove the clean air hose. Refer to HOSE, CLEAN AIR, REMOVAL .
- Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to REMOVAL
.
- Loosen the CLIC E®
type clamp using the Pliers, Hose Clamp (special tool #10288, Pliers, Hose Clamp) and remove the upper radiator inlet (2) and lower radiator outlet (1) hoses.
- Loosen the CLIC E® type clamp using the Pliers, Hose Clamp (special tool #10288, Pliers, Hose Clamp) and remove the engine oil cooler inlet (1) and outlet (2) hoses.
- Remove the serpentine belt. Refer to BELT, SERPENTINE, REMOVAL
.
- Open the 12 volt protective cover (3).
- Remove the generator 12 volt connector nut (1).
- Disconnect the generator fielding connector (4).
- Reposition the harness (2) aside.
- Remove the generator bolts.
- Remove the generator (5).
- Disconnect the electrical connectors (1) from the air conditioning compressor (2).
- Remove the air conditioning compressor bolts (1). Position the compressor (2) aside and secure with a strap.NOTE:
The is no need to separate the lines from the compressor.
- Disconnect the fuel line (1) and the purge line (2) quick-connect couplings.
- Disconnect the wire harness connector (2) from the Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) sensor (1).
- Disconnect the connector (2) from the oil temperature sensor (1).
- Remove the coolant reservoir return hose bolts (1). Disconnect both ends of the pipe and remove the hose assembly (2).
- Disengage the engine wire harness retainers.
- Disconnect the transmission cooler hoses at the transmission fittings. Install plugs to limit the fluid loss.
- Remove the skid plate (if equipped). Refer to PLATE, SKID, SIDE, REMOVAL .
- Remove the front wheels. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Remove the left wheel well liner. Refer to REMOVAL
.
- Remove the front fascia assembly (1). Refer to FASCIA, FRONT, REMOVAL
.
- Remove the bolt (2) holding the windshield washer fluid reservoir to the battery tray.
- Disengage the retainer (1) from the harness at the bottom of the battery tray.
- Remove the battery tray. Refer to TRAY, BATTERY, REMOVAL
.
- Remove the bracket retaining bolts (1) and the crossmember to fascia support beam brackets.
- Remove the front tow hooks. Refer to REMOVAL
.
- Remove the fasteners (2) securing the right and left lower bumper reinforcement (1) and front fascia support beams to the frame/front end module.
- Remove the front fascia support beams (1).
- Remove the propeller shaft, if equipped. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Remove the exhaust crossunder pipe. Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST CROSSUNDER, REMOVAL .
- Remove the rear engine mount insulator. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Remove the front suspension crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, REAR SUSPENSION, REMOVAL .
- Remove the Power Transfer Unit (PTU), if equipped. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Remove the starter motor. Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL .
- Remove the exhaust manifold/catalytic converter. Refer to REMOVAL
.
- Remove the bolt holding the ground cable (2) to transaxle and separate the cable from transaxle (1).
- Disconnect the shifter cables from the transmission. Refer to CABLE, SHIFT, REMOVAL
.
- If the transmission is to be removed from the engine, remove the torque converter bolts (1).
- Reposition the main wire harness away from the engine.
- Raise and position the vehicle height to allow Power Train Dolly (special tool #6135, Dolly, Power Train) (3) and Engine Support Cradle (special tool #6710A, Cradle, Engine Support) (2) to be installed under the engine/transaxle assembly.
- Loosen the cradle engine mounts to allow movement for positioning onto the engine locating holes on the engine block and oil pan rail. Align the powertrain to the engine support cradle. Position/adjust as necessary. Tighten the posts to the cradle frame. Secure the engine/transaxle assembly to the dolly/cradle with safety straps (1).
- Remove the left engine mount insulator. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Remove the right engine mount insulator. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Slowly raise the vehicle to allow it to clear the powertrain assembly.CAUTION:
Make sure that all components are clear of obstructions while raising the vehicle off of the powertrain assembly.
NOTE:Perform the following steps to remove the transmission from the engine if required.
- Affix a chain to the transmission mount bracket to be used as a lifting point.
- Using an engine hoist, remove the slack from the lifting chain.
- Remove the bell-housing bolts (2).
- Separate the engine (1) from the transmission (3).
