Strut, Suspension, Assembly: Assembly
CAUTION:
Do not use any type of pliers on the chrome machined surface of shock/strut rod to assist in the disassembly/assembly of shocks or struts. Use only tools designed to hold the shock/strut rod stationary when servicing shock or strut components.
- Position the coil spring in the spring compressor following the manufacturer's instructions. Before compressing the spring, rotate the spring so the end of the bottom coil is aligned with the index mark made during disassembly or at approximately the 9 o'clock position as viewed from above. This action will allow the strut (damper) clevis bracket to be positioned outward, away from the compressor once installed.
- Slowly compress the coil spring until enough room is available for strut assembly reassembly.
- Install the bearing and upper spring seat, and isolator on top of the coil spring.
- Install the upper mount on top of the bearing and upper spring seat.
- Install the lower spring isolator on the spring seat on the strut (damper).
- Slide the jounce bumper and dust shield onto the strut rod.
- Install the strut up through the bottom of the coil spring, upper spring seat and the mount and bearing, until the lower spring seat contacts the lower end of the coil spring. Rotate the strut as necessary until the end of the bottom coil comes in contact with the stop built into the lower spring isolator.
- While holding the strut in position, install the (special tool #10140-2, Receiver) nut on the end of the strut rod.CAUTION:
Never use impact or high speed tools to remove or install the strut rod nut. This can cause internal damage to the strut and the strut will no longer function correctly.
- Install (special tool #9362, Wrench, Strut Nut) (1) on the strut rod nut. Install a hex head wrench (2) on the end of the strut rod. While holding the strut rod from turning and using a torque wrench on the end of the Special Tool (3), tighten to the proper torque specifications
Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Slowly release the tension from the coil spring by backing off the compressor drive completely. As the tension is relieved, make sure the upper mount and bearing align properly. Verify the upper mount does not bind when rotated.
- Remove the strut assembly (1) from the spring compressor (2).
- Install the strut assembly on the vehicle Refer to STRUT, SUSPENSION, ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION .
