2.4L MULTIAIR: Installation
Hoisting and jack lift points provided in this service information are for a complete vehicle. When the transaxle is removed, the center of gravity will shift to the rear of the vehicle, possibly creating an unstable condition. Place safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle to stabilize the vehicle. Personal injury may result if safety stands are not used.
If installing a new transmission, remove the shipping cap from the vent.
- Visually inspect the flexplate for damage.
- Lightly grease the torque converter hub pocket in the end of the crankshaft.NOTE:
The close tolerance torque converter bolt hole is oval shaped, and will aid in aligning the flexplate to the torque converter if the torque converter bolt is installed in this location first.
- Rotate the flexplate so the close tolerance bolt hole (1), recognized by the flat sides (2), is at the six o' clock position.
- While guiding the transmission past obstacles, jack (1) the transmission upward until the engine and the transmission are in line.
- Push the bell housing against the engine block until the guide pins engage.CAUTION:
Ensure that the transmission bell housing and the engine block are flush before installing the bolts. Never utilize the mounting bolts to draw the transmission to the engine.
- Align the wire harness bracket (2) and install the engine block to transmission bolt (1) hand tight.
- Install the lower starter bolt hand tight (1).
- Install the bolts (1) to hold the oil pan to the bellhousing hand tight.
- Install the transmission to engine bolt (1) and tighten all installed bolts to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the shifter cable bracket and tighten the bolt to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- If equipped, install the Power transfer Unit (PTU). Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the front suspension crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, FRONT SUSPENSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.
- Place a wooden block (2) between the lower load beam (3) and the transmission (1).
- Lower the high stand and the transmission jack until the transmission rests on the wooden block.
- Remove the high stand and transmission jack from under the vehicle.CAUTION:
It is essential that correct length bolts be used to attach the converter to the driveplate. Failure to follow this caution may result in transmission damage.
- Through the access door opening, install the bolts (1) to hold the flexplate to the torque converter hand tight. Rotate the crankshaft to bring each set of bolts into view through the access door.NOTE:
There are three pairs of bolts 120° apart attaching the flexplate to the torque converter.
- Use an appropriate wrench (2) on the damper bolt (1) to rotate the crankshaft to install all the torque converter bolts.
- Tighten all the torque converter bolts to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the torque converter bolt access door (1) and tighten the bolt (2) to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the transmission cooler lines to the transmission. Refer to TUBES AND HOSES, TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle and lower the vehicle.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the left upper transmission to engine bolt (2) through the wiring harness bracket (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the right upper transmission to engine bolt (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the upper starter bolt (2) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the left engine to the transmission mount adapter (2) and tighten the bolts (1) to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Position a floor jack under the transmission.
- Install the left side engine mount. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, LEFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Lower and remove the floor jack.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Place the ground cable (1) in position on the transmission tighten the bolt (2) to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the left inner splash shield. Refer to SHIELD, SPLASH, FRONT WHEELHOUSE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

- Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.
- Install the exhaust pipe bracket bolt (3) to the transmission and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the bolts (1) for the wire harness routing bracket (2) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the transmission wire harness connector (1) to the transmission and rotate the locking lever (2) clockwise.
- While pulling the locking ring (2), position the shifter cable (1) into the bracket (3).
- Attach the shifter cable end (1) to the manual lever (2).
- Connect the Transmission Control Module (TCM) wire harness connector (3).
- Install the battery tray. Refer to TRAY, BATTERY, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Fill the transmission to the proper level with the specified fluid. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the engine cover. Refer to COVER, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If transmission is replaced, program the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the Transmission Control Module (TCM) with the scan tool.NOTE:
Only perform the Valve Body Solenoid Learn procedure if the valve body and/or the TCM was replaced during a repair. Do not perform this procedure if the repair did not require the valve body and/or TCM to be replaced. Do not perform this procedure if the transmission is being replaced.
- If transmission is replaced or internal repairs were made, perform Transmission Verification Test-948TE. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST - 948TE 9HP48 .
