Engine Timing Verification

CAUTION:

Do not rotate the crankshaft using the damper bolt. The bolt has left-hand threads and can be inadvertently loosened resulting in loss of camshaft timing. Only rotate the damper itself in a clockwise direction (as viewed from the front).

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the vacuum pump. Refer to PUMP, VACUUM, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  4. Remove the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  5. Remove the lower gearbox bolts (1a) and remove the dust shield (1b).

  6. Using the (special tool #2069100090, Holder, Front Damper 3 Pin), rotate the crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from the front) and install the (special tool #2063600090, Pin, Flywheel Locking) timing tool (1) through the crankcase and into the flexplate.

  7. Install the (special tool #2063500090, Locking, Camshaft) timing tool (1a) on the vacuum pump mounting surface while positioning the pin (1b) in the camshaft hole (1c).
  8. Install and securely tighten the timing tool bolts in the vacuum pump mounting surface.
    NOTE:

    If the (special tool #2063500090, Locking, Camshaft) bolts can not be installed because the holes are not aligned, the engine timing is not correct and must be reset

    Refer to DAMPER, VIBRATION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .

  9. If the engine timing is correct, remove the (special tool #2063500090, Locking, Camshaft) and the (special tool #2063600090, Pin, Flywheel Locking).

  10. Install the dust shield (1a) and tighten the bolts (1b) securing the gearbox to the engine to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  11. Install the vacuum pump. Refer to PUMP, VACUUM, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  12. Install the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
