Removal And Installation: 6.4L: Notes
REMOVAL
NOTE:
The steering column on some vehicles may not be equipped with an internal locking shaft that allows the ignition key cylinder to be locked with the key. Alternative methods of locking the steering wheel for service should be used.
- Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position with the steering wheel centered and secured.
- Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to RESONATOR, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the left front wheelhouse splash shield. Refer to SHIELD, SPLASH, FRONT WHEELHOUSE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1 - Power Steering Hose Routing Bracket Bolt - Remove the power steering hose routing bracket bolt.
1 - Wire Harness Routing Connector 2 - Wire Harness Routing Clip - Disconnect the wire harness connector.
- Disengage the wire harness routing clip.
1 - Air Cleaner Bracket Bolt - Remove the air cleaner bracket bolt.
1 - Air Cleaner Bracket Nut - Remove the air cleaner bracket nut.
1 - Air Cleaner Bracket Bolt - Remove the air cleaner bracket bolts and position the bracket aside.
1 - Intermediate Shaft Coupler Pinch Bolt 2 - Power Steering Lines - Remove the two power steering lines from the steering gear.
- Remove and DISCARD the intermediate shaft coupler pinch bolt, then disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Disconnect the pitman arm from the steering gear. Refer to ARM, PITMAN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
1 - Power Steering Gear Bolts - Remove the four power steering gear bolts.
- Remove the steering gear.
INSTALLATION
During installation, torque the fasteners to the specifications in the torque table(s) below.
Follow the removal procedure in reverse for general reassembly of the components on the vehicle. The steps listed below are calling out specific procedures that should be followed during installation.
- Apply threadlocker to the steering gear bolts.
- Install a NEW intermediate shaft coupler lower pinch bolt.
- Fill the power steering system to the proper level. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS .
- Perform the wheel alignment procedure. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
