Removal And Installation: Transmission: Notes
REMOVAL
Hoisting and jack lift points provided in this manual are for a complete vehicle. When the transaxle is removed, the center of gravity will shift to the rear of the vehicle, possibly creating an unstable condition. Place safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle to stabilize the vehicle. Personal injury may result if safety stands are not used.
- Remove the air intake tube. Refer to TUBE, INTAKE AIR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the clean air hose. Refer to HOSE, CLEAN AIR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the battery tray. Refer to TRAY, BATTERY, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the front fascia. Refer to FASCIA, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1 - Pressurized Coolant Bottle 2 - Retaining Tab 3 - Lower Coolant Hose - Disengage the pressurized coolant bottle retaining tabs and position the bottle aside.
1 - Transmission Shifter to Floor Bolts 2 - Transmission Shifter Cable Grommet To Floor Nuts 3 - Transmission Shifter Cable Bracket To Transmission Bolts - Disconnect the shifter cable from the transmission.
- Remove the transmission shifter cable bracket to transmission bolts and position cable and bracket aside.
- Remove the front halfshafts. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Disconnect transmission wire harness connector, TRS harness connector and electric oil pump harness connector.
1 - Fuel Pump Supply Line Quick-Connect Fitting 2 - Fuel Quantity Solenoid Wire Harness Connector - Disconnect the high pressure fuel pump fuel quantity solenoid wire harness connector.
- Remove the PTU/starter wiring bracket bolts from the transmission.
- Detach transmission vent hose clip.
1 - Bellhousing to Engine Bolts 2 - Engine Oil Pan to Bellhousing Bolts - Remove the upper bellhousing to engine bolts.
1 - Transmission Isolator to Transmission Adaptor Bolts 2 - Transmission Isolator to Frame Bolts 3 - Transmission Adaptor To Transmission Bolts - Support the transmission with a jack and remove the transmission isolator.
1 - Transmission Isolator to Transmission Adaptor Bolts 2 - Transmission Isolator to Frame Bolts 3 - Transmission Adaptor To Transmission Bolts - Lower jack to allow the transmission to rest on left lower load beam.
1 - Transmission End Cover 2 - Left Lower Load Beam - Raise the vehicle.
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
- Remove the front suspension crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, FRONT SUSPENSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Disconnect transmission oil cooler jumper hoses from the transmission oil cooler manifold.
- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove and DISCARD
the torque converter bolts.
1 - Flexplate to Crankshaft Bolts 2 - Torque Converter Bolts - Position a high stand under the engine.
1 - High Stand 2 - Transmission Jack - Remove the engine oil pan to bellhousing bolts.CAUTION:
The transmission and torque converter must be removed as an assembly to avoid component damage. The converter driveplate, oil pump, or oil seal can be damaged if the converter is left attached to the driveplate during removal. Be sure to remove the transmission and converter as an assembly.
1 - Bellhousing to Engine Bolts 2 - Engine Oil Pan to Bellhousing Bolts - Remove the transmission.
INSPECTION:
- Inspect the flexplate for damage or wear.
- Make sure the transmission alignment dowels are properly installed the engine block.
INSTALLATION
During installation, torque the fasteners to the specifications in the torque table(s) below.
Ensure that the transmission bell housing and the engine block are flush before installing the bolts. Never utilize the mounting bolts to draw the transmission to the engine.
Follow the removal procedure in reverse for general reassembly of the components on the vehicle. The steps listed below are calling out specific procedures that should be followed during installation.
- Apply a light coat of grease to the torque converter hub pocket in the crankshaft.
- Install NEW torque converter bolts.
- Make sure the transmission vent hose is properly routed and secured.
- Fill the transmission to the proper oil level. Refer to TRANSMISSION FILL AFTER SERVICE .
- If the transmission, TCM, valve body or any solenoid is replaced, perform the Drive Learn procedure. Refer to DRIVE LEARN .
