DTC 56: Driver Module Open

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect ADU connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/Red wire between ADU connector terminal No. 11 and upper clockspring connector No. 2. See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step  4.
  2. Disconnect lower clockspring connector. Measure resistance between ADU connector terminal No. 11 (Yellow/Red wire) and lower wire harness connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Red wire). See Figure. If resistance is infinite, replace wire harness between ADU and clockspring. If resistance is not infinite, go to next step.
  3. Measure resistance between lower clockspring connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Red wire) and upper clockspring connector terminal No. 2. If resistance is infinite, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is not infinite, go to next step.
  4. Connect lower clockspring connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/Black wire between ADU connector terminal No. 10 and terminal No. 3 of upper clockspring connector. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, replace driver-side air bag module.
  5. Disconnect lower clockspring connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/Black wire between ADU connector terminal No. 10 and terminal No. 3 of lower clockspring connector. If resistance is infinite, replace wire harness between ADU connector and clockspring. If resistance is not infinite, go to next step.
  6. Measure resistance between lower clockspring connector terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Black wire) and upper clockspring connector terminal No. 3. If resistance is infinite, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is not infinite, replace driver-side air bag module.
