SERVICE INFORMATION
This article provides guidance for answering customer complaints related to map data accuracy. For instance, complaints such as:
"Cannot find a specific POI (Point of Interest)"
"Cannot find a particular address"
"New street is missing from navigation"
At this time, vehicle navigation systems in Kia vehicles are updated once per year. If the customer is comparing to a smart phone navigation/map application which is updated with over the air updates continuously, try to explain the following:
- Contrary to what happens when map data is retrieved on a cell phone, in-vehicle map data typically is retrieved from the Audio/NAV head unit itself, where by necessity the entire map data base is stored. The Audio/NAV unit (since there is no built in cell phone (or modem) cannot communicate with a "remote map data base" and therefore cannot not provide "Over the Air" map information.
- Map data, specific to the US market, is purchased by MNSoft (Kia's map supplier) every year.
- MNSoft then compiles the data so that it can interface with existing navigation software.
- Once the compilation is complete, the map data is integrated into the navigation system and then tested and validated (verified).
- The entire process takes approximately 6-8 months.
- A new database is made available to customers (typically in late summer) which contains the updated map data.
No map database is perfect and there may be some streets, addresses, and POIs missing. If the customer has an issue with particular items missing from the system they can fill out a Map Error Report by following the procedure.
