SERVICE INFORMATION

NOTE: This bulletin has been revised to include additional information. New/revised sections of this bulletin are indicated by a black bar in the margin area.

This bulletin provides information related to an SST to assist with diagnosing A/C concerns on vehicles equipped with a variable displacement Electronic Control Valve (ECV) type A/C compressor with or without magnetic clutches.

Refer to the applicable shop manual HVAC section for the vehicle, and follow the procedures outlined in this bulletin whenever the vehicle experiences the following symptoms:

NOTE: High side pressure should be greater than 130 PSI (896kpa, 9.1kg/cm2) during MAX A/C use.

The A/C Compressor Diagnosis Kit applies only to vehicles equipped with ECV type compressors. Refer to page 7 for applicable models and connector configuration.

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE - A/C PERFORMANCE TEST

  1. Start the engine, set the blower speed to level 2, and select MAX A/C.
    • MAX A/C: A/C 'ON', coldest temperature setting, and recirculated air.

  2. Check system status related to the HVAC system and A/C compressor using the KDS.
    • The system status of all related components should be indicating ON.
    • If the KDS is showing the compressor status as OFF, then check the various wiring harness and connection points from the A/C Heater Control Unit to the A/C compressor.

  3. Check the A/C pressure using the KDS.
    • If the pressure is more than 130 PSI, the A/C system is operating normally.

      Specification: 130 PSI (896 kPa, 9.1 kg/cm 2  ). 

    • If the pressure is out of specifications, continue the diagnosis by using the A/C Compressor Diagnosis Kit.

DIAGNOSIS KIT CONNECTION

  1. Verify DVOM is in working order.
    1. Test DVOM test leads are in working order
    2. Set to ohms ('Q')
    3. Short leads together
    4. Subtract measured value from the value measured later in this bulletin for an accurate resistance reading.

  2. Verify SST is in working order.
    1. Connect both alligator clips together.
    2. Set the switch to the 'OFF' position
    3. Use connector "TCLE 020 F" and measure the resistance between terminal one (1) and two (2) of the ECV connector.
      • Resistance should be O.L.  If not, check for short in SST.
    4. Set the switch to the "ON" position.
      • Resistance should be less than 1 ohm  . If not, check for open in the SST such as an open fuse or defective switch.

        If SST is OK, proceed to step 3.

        NOTE: Turn the engine OFF before disconnecting and reconnecting the A/C Compressor Diagnosis Kit.
  3. Disconnect the main wiring harness (A) at the A/C compressor connection (B).
    NOTE: Two (2) pin shown.

  4. Connect the A/C Compressor Diagnostic Kit (C) to the A/C Compressor harness (B).
    NOTE:
    • For compressors equipped with a pigtail harness from the ECV, connect the Main Compressor Harness from the kit to the ECV pigtail harness.
    • For compressors not equipped with a pigtail harness from the ECV, connect directly to the ECV using the applicable extension harness.

ECV RESISTANCE TEST

  1. Connect the B+ (red) and the negative (black) power lead clips in the diagnosis kit to a DVOM set to ohms ('Ω').

  2. Turn the diagnosis kit switch to the 'ON' position.

  3. Check and record the ECV resistance using the DVOM.
    • Normal resistance: 10.1 - 11.1Ω when the ambient temperature is 77°F.
    • Resistance may vary according to the engine compartment temperature.
    NOTE: Acceptable normal resistance range: 8 - 14Ω

    NOTE: Replace the ECV if the resistance is either less than 8Ω or greater than 14 Ω.(Refer to the applicable parts catalog for the latest service part number.)  Follow service manual procedure to replace.
  4. Repeat the A/C Performance Test after replacing the ECV.

A/C PRESSURE TEST

NOTE: Before starting step  1:
  1. Connect the diagnosis kit to the vehicle battery terminal as follows:
    • Connect the red  clip to the B+ terminal.
    • Connect the black clip to the B-terminal.

  2. Start the engine, set the blower speed to level 2, and select MAX A/C.
    • MAX A/C: A/C 'ON', coldest temperature setting, and recirculated air.
  3. Turn the diagnosis kit switch to the ON position and check and record the A/C pressure.
    NOTE: The following specifications are normal pressures when the ambient temperature is 77°F.
    • Using a manifold gauge: Low side range is 20-40 PSI, high side range is 140-190 PSI.
    • Using KDS: A/C pressure should read 130 PSI (896 kPa, 9.1 kg/cm2) .

      NOTE: Do not run the A/C with the diagnosis kit switch in the 'ON' position more than 30 seconds. The evaporator core or expansion valve may freeze and alter the pressure gauge reading.
  4. If the pressure is normal using the diagnosis kit (even though it did not pass "Section I. A/C Performance Test"):
    • Check the various wiring harness and connection points from the A/C Heater Control Unit to the A/C compressor.
    • Repair any damaged wiring or connections along the wiring harness.
    • Repeat A/C Pressure Test to verify repair.
  5. If out of specification or erratic pressures are showing on the manifold gauge or the KDS:
    • Evacuate and Recharge the refrigerant and record the results. Perform leak testing if refrigerant level is out of specification.
    • Check A/C line for blockage if there are no leaks found.
    • Check the radiator cooling fan for proper operation.
    • Repeat A/C Pressure Test to verify repair.
  6. If the test results lead to an out-of-spec compressor:
    • Check the ECV pins/terminals for bent or poor contact condition before replacing the compressor.
    • Replace the compressor only if no other faults are found and the compressor is not operational.

  7. After installation of the new compressor, verify operation by performing the A/C Performance Test.
