SERVICE INFORMATION
This bulletin provides the procedure to relocate the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) blower motor 40-ampere fuse on certain 2021-2022MY K5 (DL3a) vehicles produced from February 23, 2021 through May 3, 2021 that were originally sold in one of the 7 high-heat states (AZ, FL, HI, LA, MS, NV, and TX). The HVAC system provides cooling and heating to help maintain a comfortable environment inside the vehicle. The blower motor provides primary airflow for the HVAC system. Extended use of the HVAC at high fan speeds may cause damage to the multi-fuse terminals for the HVAC blower motor circuit, which can cause the blower motor to become inoperative, resulting in reduced heat and air conditioning. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to relocate the HVAC blower motor 40-ampere fuse to another circuit within the multi-fuse which has an increased terminal width on the applicable vehicle. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
- Remove the battery (A) by referring to "Engine Electrical System → Charging System → Battery → Repair procedures" in the applicable Shop Manual on KGIS.
Tightening torque for negative (-) and positive (+) terminals:
7.2 - 8.7 lb.ft (9.8 - 11.8 N.m)
Tightening torque for battery bracket:
6.5 - 10.1 lb.ft (8.8 - 13.7 N.m)
- Remove the air duct (B).
-
- Loosen the two (2) retaining bolts (C).
- Loosen the band clamp (D).
- Disconnect the vacuum hose (E).
- Disconnect the ejector (F).
- Remove the air cleaner assembly (G).
Tightening torque for bolts:
5.8 - 7.2 lb.ft (7.8 - 9.8 N.m)
- Release the two (2) locking tabs and remove the junction box fuse cover (H).
- Remove the blower motor relay (I).
- Loosen the 10mm retaining multi-fuse nut (J) and remove the two (2) multi-fuses (K) by releasing the hook.
Tightening torque for retaining nut (D):
7.2 - 8.7 lb.ft (9.8 - 11.8 N.m)
- Loosen the junction box assembly (L) bolt and nut.
Tightening torque for bolts:
5.8 - 7.2 lb.ft (7.8 - 9.8 N.m)
- Using a clip removal tool, disengage/detach the junction box assembly (L) clip.
- Detatch the nine (9) locking tabs to separate top (M) and bottom (N) halves of the junction box.NOTE: If the locking tabs breaks during separation, the top and bottom halves can still be properly reattached.
- Using a pick/awl, detach the four (4) clips to remove the blower motor connector lock (O).NOTE: If any of the connector lock (O) tabs break, replace with the new one provided.
- Using a pick/awl, detatch the wiring pin (J) release tab from the blower motor relay position on the junction block (L).
- While the wiring pin (J) release tab is detached, use a flathead screwdriver and press the wiring pin down to remove it from the top half (M) of the junction block (L).
- Using a pick/awl, disengage the wiring pin (P) release tab from the multi-fuse (K) #3 position on the junction block (L).
- Install one end of the new
wire in the blower motor relay (I) position on the junction block (L), as shown.
- Insert the other end of the new
wire in the multi-fuse (K) #6 position on the junction block (L), as shown.NOTE: Ensure that the new wire is secured behind the fabric tape, as shown.
- Install new junction box fuse cover label (Q) on the junction box fuse cover (H).
- Reinstall all removed parts in reverse order of removal.
- Confirm normal vehicle operation.
