Timing Chain Cover: Installation
NOTE:
When installing the timing chain cover, install the timing chain cover first before installing the Variable Force Solenoid (VFS).
- Install the timing chain cover.
- Before assembling the timing chain cover, remove all hardened sealant from the surface to be mounted.
- Assemble within 5 minutes after applying liquid gasket sealant MS721-40 AA or AAO to the surface between the cylinder head and the cylinder block.
Bead width: 4.000 mm (0.1575 in.)
- Apply MS721-40AA or AAO liquid sealant on timing chain cover. Then, assemble the part within 5 minutes of applying sealant.
Sealant should be applied in a continuous bead in each of the areas indicated below.
Bead width: 3.500 - 4.500 mm (0.1378 - 0.1772 in.)
- Install the gaskets (A) to the timing chain cover.NOTE:
- When installing the timing chain cover, be careful not to get the applied sealant on other parts.
- Always use a new gasket.
- Install the timing chain cover based on the dowel pin of the cylinder block and the hole in the timing chain cover.
Tightening torque:
bolts (A): 18.6 - 21.6 N.m (1.9 - 2.2 kgf.m, 13.8 - 15.9 lb.ft)
bolts (B): 9.8 - 11.8 N.m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf.m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb.ft)
- Be careful not to run the engine or apply pressure inside the timing chain cover within 30 minutes after assembly. Engine oil leakage may occur.
- Install the RH and LH Variable Force Solenoid (VFS) (A).

NOTE:- If Variable Force Solenoid (VFS) valve is dropped, do not reuse it.
- When installing Variable Force Solenoid (VFS), observe the precautions below.
- After replacing the Variable Force Solenoid (VFS) O-ring (A) with a new one, apply engine oil to the new O-ring (A).
- After attaching Variable Force Solenoid (VFS) to the end of the timing chain cover mounting surface, temporarily fasten the bolt.
- Tighten the Variable Force Solenoid (VFS) with the specified torque.
- Install in the reverse order of removal.
- Fill the engine coolant.
(Refer to Cooling System - "COOLANT ")
NOTE: Be sure to add coolant according to the ITM coolant refill method. - Fill the engine oil
(Refer to Lubrication System - "ENGINE OIL ")
- Start engine and check for any leaks.
