Power Steering Fluid Leaks

  1. Check fluid level. See FLUID LEVEL CHECK  under LUBRICATION. If the fluid level is correct, got to step  3 . If the fluid level is not correct, refill or drain to correct level. Bleed system and check for leaks. See POWER STEERING SYSTEM  under BLEEDING.
  2. If the problem is resolved, procedure is complete. If the problem is not resolved, go to next step.
  3. Check, on full lock, hoses and leaking joints with engine at 2000 rev/min. If hoses and joints are leaking, loosen and re-torque joints. If not, got to step  6 .
  4. If the leak remains, change power steering fluid pipes. See POWER STEERING FLUID PIPES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If the leak does not remain, procedure is complete.
  5. If the leak remains, suspect seal in component. Check and replace as necessary. If the leak does not remain, procedure is complete.
  6. Check for oil escaping from the filler cap. If oil is escaping from filler cap, bleed system. See POWER STEERING SYSTEM  under BLEEDING. If there is no oil escaping, go to step  8 .
  7. If oil is still escaping from filler cap, go back to step  1 . If oil is not escaping from filler cap, procedure is complete.
  8. If oil is leaking from power steering pump, go to step  10 . If oil is not leaking from power steering pump, go to next step.
  9. If there is oil leaking from power steering box, go to next step. If oil is there is no oil leaking from power steering box, procedure is complete.
  10. Clean unit, add tracer dye to system. Retest.
  11. If oil is still leaking, establish leak point. Repair or replace unit as necessary. If there is no oil leaking, procedure is complete.
