Test D: Speedometer Does Not Operate
- Turn ignition on. Place gear selector in Neutral. Disconnect instrument cluster connector (C1). See Fig 1 . Raise vehicle. Connect voltmeter positive lead to instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 3 (Yellow or Yellow/Pink wire), and connect negative lead to ground. While turning drive wheel by hand, measure voltage. Voltage should fluctuate. If voltage fluctuates, replace instrument cluster. If voltage does not fluctuate, go to next step.
- If vehicle is NOT equipped with a vehicle speed sensor buffer, and voltage did not fluctuate in step1) , check Yellow and Green wires from vehicle speed sensor for opens or shorts. Check vehicle speed sensor. See Figure .If equipped with a vehicle speed sensor buffer, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor buffer connector (if equipped). See Figure . Connect voltmeter positive lead to speed sensor buffer connector terminal No. 86 (White/Green wire). See Fig 2 . Connect voltmeter negative lead to ground and measure voltage. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, inspect B4 fuse (10-amp) or repair White/Green wire.
- Ensure ignition is on and vehicle speed sensor buffer is disconnected. Connect voltmeter positive lead to speed sensor buffer connector terminal No. 86 (White/Green wire). See Fig 3 . Connect voltmeter negative lead to terminal No. 85 (Black wire) and measure voltage. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair Black wire.
- Turn ignition on. Place gear selector in Neutral. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor buffer. Raise vehicle. Connect voltmeter positive lead to speed sensor buffer connector terminal No. 30 (Yellow wire). See Fig 4 . Connect voltmeter negative lead to ground and measure voltage. Voltage should fluctuate. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair Yellow or White/Green wire, or replace vehicle speed sensor. See Figure .
- With ignition on, reconnect vehicle speed sensor buffer. Place gear selector in Neutral and raise vehicle. Using a voltmeter with its negative lead connected to ground, backprobe speed sensor buffer at connector terminal No. 87 (Yellow/Pink wire). See Fig 5 . While turning drive wheel by hand, measure voltage. Voltage should fluctuate. If voltage fluctuates, repair Yellow/Pink wire. If voltage does not fluctuate, inspect Yellow/Pink and Yellow/Orange wires for short, or replace vehicle speed sensor buffer.
NOTE:
Not all models are equipped with a vehicle speed sensor buffer.
