Section 2 (Disc): Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1998 Land Rover Range Rover, 1998 Land Rover Discovery, 1997 Land Rover Range Rover, 1997 Land Rover Discovery, and 1997 Land Rover Defender 90. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

All models are equipped with front and rear disc brakes. On Defender and Discovery, front calipers contain 4 pistons and rear calipers contain 2 pistons. On Range Rover, front calipers contain 2 pistons and rear calipers contain one piston. Non-ABS systems use a Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) between front (secondary circuit) and rear (primary circuit) brakes. Brake fluid reservoir cap includes a brake fluid level switch. Brake fluid level switch illuminates an instrument panel warning light when fluid is too low.

Parking brake is a single drum brake assembly mounted on the rear of the transfer case output shaft. Parking brake acts on rear driveshaft, and is cable-actuated by hand brake lever.

A vacuum-assisted brake booster is used to ease brake pedal application. A vacuum check valve, located in vacuum supply hose, prevents vacuum leakdown when engine is off.
