Steering Gear: Reassembly

  1. Replace union seat if necessary. If needle bearings were removed, use bearing remover/installer to install upper bearing flush with housing end surface. Install outer bearing so bearing is positioned 0.909" (23.09 mm) from outer edge of housing.
  2. Install "O" ring, Teflon ring, spacer, and snap ring. Insert Ring Former (09631-00120) into Teflon ring to form ring to correct size. Using Remover/Installer (09631-00090), install oil seal into housing. Coat oil seal with ATF. Install NEW Teflon ring and "O" ring onto power piston.
  3. Using ring compressor, compress Teflon rings on power piston for 5-7 minutes. Remove ring compressor. Install worm gear valve body assembly. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Rotate worm shaft completely in both directions.
  4. Attach INCH-lb. torque wrench and Adapter (09616-00010) to worm shaft. Rotate worm shaft and note starting torque. Replace worm gear valve body assembly if starting torque is not 2.7-4.4 INCH lbs. (0.3-0.5 N.m). DO NOT allow power piston to rotate while checking starting torque.
  5. Install plunger, plunger guide, spring, "O" ring, and plunger guide nut. Tighten plunger guide nut to specification. Center power piston in housing. Install end cover and "O" ring onto sector shaft. Install sector shaft so center tooth aligns with power piston. Fully loosen sector shaft adjusting screw. Tighten end cover bolts to specification.
  6. Rotate worm shaft from side to side, and leave in center position. Attach INCH-lb. torque wrench and Adapter (09631-00010) onto worm shaft. Rotate worm shaft and note rotating torque.
  7. Tighten sector shaft adjusting screw while rotating worm shaft to obtain preload torque of 1.8-3.5 INCH lbs. (0.2-0.4 N.m) greater than reading obtained in step 4). Install NEW washer and nut onto sector shaft adjusting screw. Tighten lock nut while holding sector shaft adjusting screw.
  8. Measure starting torque on worm shaft. Total starting torque should be 4.4-8.0 INCH lbs. (0.5-0.9 N.m).
