Power Steering Pump: Disassembly
- Measure power steering vane pump rotating torque. See Fig 1. Check that the pump rotates smoothly without abnormal noise. Using a torque wrench, check the pump rotating torque. Rotation torque should be 2.4 INCH lbs. (0.3 N.m).
- Remove the bolt from suction port union. Remove the "O" ring from the union. See Fig 2.
- Using soft jaws on a vise, clamp the gear in the vise. Remove the vane pump gear set nut. See Fig 3.Using SST, press out the gear. SST 09527-10011. Remove the Woodruff key from the vane pump shaft.
- Remove pressure port union, flow control valve and spring. Remove the "O" ring from the union. See Fig 2.
- Using 2 screwdrivers, remove the snap from rear housing and wave washer. See Fig 4.
- Using a brass bar and hammer, tap the housing so that the spring force of the wave washer pushes the housing forward. See Fig 5. Gently tap the power steering pump assembly on a wood block and remove the housing and washer. Remove the "O" ring from the housing.
- Gently tap the power steering pump assembly on a wood block and remove the side rearplate. See Fig 6. Remove the "O" ring from the plate.
- Remove cam ring, vane pump rotor and 10 vane plates. Remove shorter straight pin. Remove the pin from the side front plate. See Fig 2.
- Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring. See Fig 7. Using an extension bar and hammer, tap out the vane pump shaft with the bearing. See Fig 8.
- Using SST (SST 09631-10030), tap out the side front plate from the front housing. See Fig 9. Remove the 2 "O" rings from the plate.
- Remove longer straight pin. Using pliers, remove the pin from the front housing.
NOTE:
Be careful no to damage the gear. To avoid dropping the power steering pump assembly, support the pump assembly with your hand.
CAUTION:
Take care not to damage the housing.
NOTE:
Be careful not to scratch the cam ring, rotor or vane plates.
NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the front housing.
