Test No. 7: Speedometer Does Not Operate When Driving

  1. Test drive and check odometer operation. If odometer does not work, go to next step. If odometer is okay, check trip meter operation. If trip meter is okay, replace speedometer and retest. If trip meter does not work, go to step  4.
  2. Disconnect instrument panel connector "A". Raise and support vehicle. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between connector "A" terminal No. 13 (Blue/Red wire) and No. 14 (Blue/Black wire). See Figure. Voltage should vary between zero volts and 5 volts while rotating driveshaft. If voltage is as specified, replace circuit plate and retest. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Check wiring. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAMS in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section and/or ANTI-LOCK BRAKES wiring in WIRING DIAGRAMS . Check ABS ECU. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK BRAKES article in BRAKES section. If VSS and ABS ECU are okay, go to next step.
  4. Remove instrument panel. Using jumper wires, connect harness connector "A" terminals No. 2 (Yellow wire), No. 13 (Blue/Red wire) and No. 23 (White/Black wire) to instrument panel terminals. Raise and support vehicle. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between connector "A" terminal No. 13 and No. 23. Voltage should vary between zero volts and 5 volts while rotating driveshaft. If voltage is not as specified, replace circuit plate and retest. If voltage is as specified, replace speedometer and retest.
