Steering Column: Disassembly

  1. Remove transponder key coil and key cylinder illumination. See Fig 1. Before removing No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly, make alignment marks on intermediate shaft and tilt steering gear assembly for reassembly. Remove bolt securing No. 2 intermediate shaft-to-tilt steering gear assembly. Remove intermediate shaft from steering gear assembly.
  2. Using a center punch, mark center of 2 tapered head bolts securing column upper bracket. Drill a .16-.20" (4-5 mm) hole in center of 2 tapered head bolts. Using a screw extractor, remove 2 tapered head bolts.
  3. Remove column tube support bolt. Remove column tube support with tube attachment. Remove tube attachment from tube support. Remove 3 bolts securing turn signal bracket and remove turn signal bracket. Remove 2 bolts securing steering column protector and remove steering column protector.
  4. Remove 4 bolts, 2 washers and tilt slider assembly. Remove 4 bushings and 2 plates from tilt slider assembly.
  5. Remove No. 1 bracket and No. 2 bracket. Remove 2 bolts securing tilt and telescopic ECU and remove tilt and telescopic ECU.
