Removal & Installation: Starter

  1. Disconnect battery cables.
  2. Remove 8 clips, remove lower radiator air deflector.
  3. Remove air cleaner inlet using the following steps:
    1. Remove wire harness clamp. See Fig 1.
    2. Remove 2 vacuum hoses from hose claps.
    3. Remove 2 bolts, then remove air cleaner inlet.

  4. Remove battery and battery tray.
  5. Remove air cleaner assembly using the following steps:
    1. Disconnect mass air flow meter connector.
    2. Disconnect 4 vacuum hoses. See Fig 2.
    3. Loosen 2 air cleaner cap bolts.
    4. Loosen air cleaner hose clamp bolt, then remove air cleaner cap.
    5. Remove air cleaner filter.
    6. Disconnect VSV connector.
    7. Disconnect vacuum hose.
    8. Remove 3 bolts.
    9. Remove wire harness from 2 wire harness clamps, then remove air cleaner case.

  6. Remove air cleaner bracket by removing 2 bolts. See Fig 3.

  7. Remove bolt, then remove air cleaner inlet No. 1.
  8. Disconnect starter connector. See Fig 4.

  9. Remove nut and disconnect the lead wire from terminal No. 30.
  10. Remove 2 bolts and remove starter motor.
  11. To install starter motor, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  12. After installation is complete, initialize sunroof. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES in GENERAL INFORMATION. If power window system had customized settings, memory may be erased and will need to be reset. See appropriate WINDOWS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
