Section 527 (Wiper & Washer System): Inspection

  1. INSPECT FRONT WIPER AND WASHER SWITCH CONTINUITY 
    FRONT WIPER AND WASHER SWITCH SPECIFIED CONDITION TABLE

    Switch position Tester connection Specified condition
    OFF 7 - 16 Continuity
    AUTO 7 - 16, 4 - 14 Continuity
    LO 7 - 17 Continuity
    HI 8 - 17 Continuity
    Washer OFF - No Continuity
    Washer ON 2 - 11 Continuity

    If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch.

  2. INSPECT FRONT WIPER AND WASHER SWITCH CIRCUIT 

    Disconnect the connector from the motor and inspect the connector on the wire harness side, as shown in Fig 2 .

    FRONT CONNECTOR TERMINAL SPECIFIED CONDITION TABLE

    Tester connection Condition Specified condition
    2 - Ground Always Continuity
    11 - Ground Ignition switch LOCK or ACC No voltage
    11 - Ground Ignition switch ON Battery positive voltage

    If circuit is not as specified, inspect the circuits connected to other parts.

  3. INSPECT FRONT WIPER INTERMITTENT OPERATION 
    1. Turn the wiper switch to INT position.
    2. Turn the intermittent time control switch to FAST position.
    3. Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 16 and the battery negative (-) lead to terminal 2.
    4. Connect the voltmeter positive (+) lead to terminal 7 and the voltmeter negative (-) lead to terminal 2, and check that the meter needle indicates battery voltage.

    5. After connecting terminal 16 to terminal 17, connect to terminal 2 to terminal 17, check the voltage rises from 0 volts to battery voltage within the times as shown in Fig 4 .

      If operation is not as specified, replace the wiper and washer switch.

  4. INSPECT REAR WIPER AND WASHER SWITCH CONTINUITY 
    REAR WIPER AND WASHER SWITCH SPECIFIED CONDITION TABLE

    Switch position Tester connection Specified condition
    Washer 1 2 - 12 Continuity
    OFF - No Continuity
    INT 2 - 13 Continuity
    ON 2 - 10 Continuity
    Washer 2 2 - 10 - 12 Continuity

    If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch.

  5. INSPECT REAR WIPER AND WASHER SWITCH CIRCUIT 

    Disconnect the connector from the motor and inspect the connector on the wire harness side, as shown in Fig 7 .

    12 - Ground Ignition switch ON Battery positive voltage

    If circuit is not as specified, inspect the circuits connected to other parts.

  6. Low Speed: INSPECT FRONT WIPER MOTOR OPERATION 

    Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 1 and the battery negative (-) lead to terminal 5, and check that the motor operates at low speed.

    If operation is not as specified, replace the motor.

  7. High speed: INSPECT FRONT WIPER MOTOR OPERATION 

    Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 4 and the battery negative (-) lead to terminal 5, and check that the motor operates at high speed.

    If operation is not as specified, replace the motor.

  8. Stopping at Stop Position: INSPECT FRONT WIPER MOTOR OPERATION 
    1. Operate the motor at low speed and stop the motor operation anywhere except at the stop position by disconnecting the battery positive (+) lead from terminal 1.

    2. Connect terminals 1 and 3.
    3. Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 2 and the battery negative (-) lead to terminal 5, and check that the motor stops running at the stop position after the motor operates again.

      If operation is not as specified, replace the motor.

  9. Connector disconnected: INSPECT FRONT WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT 

    Disconnect the connector from the motor and inspect the connector on the wire harness side, as shown in Fig 12 .

    If circuit is not as specified, inspect the circuits connected to other parts.

  10. Low Speed: INSPECT REAR WIPER MOTOR OPERATION 

    Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 3 and the battery negative (-) lead to terminal 2, and check that the motor operates at low speed.

    If operation is not as specified, replace the motor.

  11. Stopping at Stop Position: INSPECT REAR WIPER MOTOR OPERATION 
    1. Operate the motor at low speed and stop the motor operation anywhere except at the stop position by disconnecting positive (+) lead from terminal 3.

    2. Connect terminals 3 and 4.
    3. Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 1 and the battery negative (-) lead to terminal 2, and check that the motor stops running at the stop position after the motor operates again.

      If operation is not as specified, replace the motor.

  12. Connector disconnected: INSPECT REAR WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT 

    Disconnect the connector from the motor and inspect the connector on the wire harness side, as shown in Fig 16 .

    Tester connection Condition Specified condition
    1 - Ground Ignition switch OFF or ACC No voltage
    1 - Ground Ignition switch ON Battery positive voltage
    2 - Ground Always Continuity
    3 - 4 Always Continuity

    If circuit is not as specified, inspect the circuits connected to other parts.

  13. INSPECT FRONT WASHER MOTOR OPERATION 

    Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 2 and the battery negative (-) lead to terminal 1, check that the motor operates.

    NOTE: These tests must be performed quickly (within 20 seconds) to prevent the coil from burning out. 

    If operation is not as specified, replace the motor.

  14. Connector disconnected: INSPECT FRONT WASHER MOTOR CIRCUIT 

    Disconnect the connector from the motor and inspect the connector on the wire harness side, as shown in Fig 18 .

    If circuit is not as specified, inspect the power source and wire harness.

  15. INSPECT REAR WASHER MOTOR OPERATION 

    Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 2 and the battery negative (-) lead to terminal 1, check that the motor operates.

    NOTE: These tests must be performed quickly (within 20 seconds) to prevent the coil from burning out. 

    If operation is not as specified, replace the motor.

  16. Connector disconnected: INSPECT REAR WASHER MOTOR CIRCUIT 

    Disconnect the connector from the motor and inspect the connector on the wire harness side, as shown in Fig 20 .
