Abs With BA & VSC - Diagnostics: Pre-Check
- DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM
- Check the warning lights and buzzer.
- Release parking brake lever.
- When the ignition switch is turned ON, check that the ABS, VSC TRAC and BRAKE warning lights, VSC OFF, SLIP and TRAC indicator lights go on for 3 sec.
- When depressing the brake pedal repeatedly it may turn on the ABS, VSC TRAC and BRAKE warning lights, VSC OFF indicator light and buzzer.
HINT:
- If the ECU stores DTC, ABS, VSC TRAC and BRAKE warning lights warning light and VSC OFF indicator light is ON.
- If the indicator check result is not normal, proceed to troubleshooting for the ABS warning light circuit, VSC TRAC warning light circuit, brake warning light circuit, VSC OFF indicator light circuit, SLIP indicator light circuit and ACTIVE TRAC indicator light circuit.

- Read the DTC from the ABS or VSC TRAC warning light on the combination meter.
HINT:

- If no code appears, inspect the Tc circuit, ABS or VSC TRAC warning light circuit.

- After completing the check, disconnect terminals Tc and E1 of DLC1 or Tc and CG of DLC3 and turn off the display.
If 2 or more malfunctions are indicated at the same time the lowest numbered DTC will be displayed 1st.
- Using SST, connect terminals Tc and E1
of DLC1 or Tc and CG of DLC3.
- In case of using hand-held tester:
Check the DTC.
- Hook up the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Read the DTC by following the prompts on the tester screen.
HINT:
Please refer to the hand-held tester operator's manual for further details.
- In case of not using hand-held tester:
Clear the DTC.
- Using SST, connect terminals Tc and E1
of DLC1 or Tc and CG of DLC3.

- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Clear the DTC stored in ECU by depressing the brake pedal 8 or more times within 5 sec.
- Check that the warning light shows the normal code.
- Remove the SST from the terminals of DLC1 or DLC3.

- Using SST, connect terminals Tc and E1
of DLC1 or Tc and CG of DLC3.
- In case of using hand-held tester:
Clear the DTC.
- Hook up the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Operate the hand-held tester to erase the codes. (See hand-held tester operator's manual.)
- Check the warning lights and buzzer.

HINT:
According to the DATA LIST displayed by the hand-held tester, you can read the value of the switch, sensor, actuator and so on without parts removal. Reading the DATA LIST as a first step of troubleshooting is one of the method to shorten the labor time.
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.

HINT:
Performing the ACTIVE TEST using the hand-held tester allows the relay, VSV, actuator and so on to operate without parts removal. Performing the ACTIVE TEST as a first step of troubleshooting is one of the method to shorten the labor time.
It is possible to display the DATA LIST during the ACTIVE TEST.
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- According to the display on tester, perform the "ACTIVE TEST".

- The vehicle (sensor) status memorized during ABS and/or VSC operation or at the time of error code detection can be displayed by the hand-held tester.
- Only one record of freeze frame data is stored and the freeze frame data generated during ABS and/or VSC operation are constantly updated. Also, the number of the ignition switch's "ON" after the freeze frame data is stored can be memorized up to 31 and it can be displayed.
HINT:
If the ignition switch "ON" operation exceeds 31 times, "31" appears on the display.
- If the diagnosis code abnormality occurs, the freeze frame data at the occurrence of the abnormality is stored but the ABS actuation data is deleted.
- SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CHECK (TEST MODE)
HINT:
- When replacing the yaw rate sensor or ECU, make sure to perform yaw rate sensor zero point calibration.
- If the ignition switch is turned from ON to ACC or LOCK during test mode, DTC will be erased.
- In case of not using hand-held tester:
Check the speed sensor signal.
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Using SST, connect terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1.

- Start the engine.
- Check that the ABS warning light blinks.
HINT:
If the ABS warning light does not blink, inspect the ABS warning light circuit and Ts circuit (See ABS WARNING LIGHT CIRCUIT and TS TERMINAL CIRCUIT ).
- Keep the vehicle in the stationary condition on the flat place for 6 sec. or more.
- Shift the transfer lever in L4 position and turn the center diff. lock switch ON.
- Shift the transfer lever back.
- Leaving the vehicle in the stationary condition and the brake pedal in free condition for 1 sec. or more, continue to depress the brake pedal with 98 N (10 kgf, 22 lbf) of force or more for 1 sec. or more.
- Leaving the vehicle in the stationary condition, depress the brake pedal with 980 N (100 kgf, 221 lbf) of force or more quickly.
HINT:
At this time, the ABS warning light comes on for 3 sec.
- Drive vehicle straight forward.
When driving the vehicle with the speed faster than 45 km/h (28 mph) for several seconds, check that the ABS warning light comes off.
HINT:
There is a case that the sensor check is not completed if the vehicle has its wheels spin or its steering wheel steered during this check.
- Stop the vehicle.
- Using SST, connect terminals Tc and E1
of DLC1 or Tc and CG of DLC3.

- Read the number of blinks of the ABS warning light.
HINT:
- See the list of DTCs. See Fig 12.
- If every sensor is normal, a normal code is output (A cycle of 0.25 sec. ON and 0.25 sec. OFF is repeated).
- If 2 or more malfunctions are indicated at the same time, the lowest numbered code will be displayed 1st.
- After doing the check, disconnect the SST from terminals of DLC1 or terminals of DLC1 and DLC3, and turn ignition switch OFF.

- Hook up the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Do step (3) to (10) on the previous page.
- Read the DTC by following the prompts on the tester screen.

VSC SENSOR CHECK (TEST MODE)
NOTE: When having replaced the yaw rate sensor, deceleration sensor and/or ECU, perform zero point calibration of the yaw rate and deceleration sensors (See step 7).HINT:
If the ignition switch is turned from ON to ACC or LOCK during test mode, DTC will be erased.
- Procedures for test mode:
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Check that the shift lever position is at P position, turn the steering wheel to the neutral position.
- Using SST, connect terminals Ts and E1
of DLC1.

- Start the engine.
- Check that the VSC TRAC warning light blinks.
HINT:
If the VSC TRAC warning light does not blink, inspect the VSC TRAC warning light circuit and Ts terminal circuit (See VSC TRAC WARNING LIGHT CIRCUIT and TS TERMINAL CIRCUIT ).

Turn the steering wheel either to left or right for 450° or more from the vehicle stationary condition, and turn back the steering wheel to the straight ahead position.
- Keep the vehicle in a stationary on a level place for 1 sec. or more.
- Check the yaw rate sensor.
Shift the shift lever to the D position and drive the vehicle at the vehicle speed of approx. 5 km/h (3 mph), turn the steering wheel either to left or right for 90° or more, and maintain 180° circular drive for the vehicle.
Stop the vehicle and shift the shift lever to the P position, check that the VSC buzzer sounds for 3 sec.
If the VSC buzzer sounded, the sensor check is in normal completion.
If the VSC buzzer does not sound, do the sensor check again. If the VSC buzzer still won't sound, check the VSC buzzer circuit, then do the sensor check again.

- Drive the vehicle circularly by 180°. At the end of the turn, the direction of the vehicle should be within 180° +/- 5° of its start position.
- Do not spin the wheels.
- Read the DTC.

HINT:

CHECK VSC SENSOR SIGNAL
NOTE: When having replaced the yaw rate sensor, deceleration sensor and/or ECU, perform zero point calibration of the yaw rate and deceleration sensors (See step 7.). Make sure that this operation should be done before starting the following.- Hook up the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Do steps (a)-(2) and from (a)-(4) to (c).
- Read the DTC by following the prompts on the tester screen.

Please refer to the hand-held tester operator's manual for further details.
DTC of the VSC sensor check function:
- IF NECESSARY, PERFORM ZERO POINT CALIBRATION OF YAW RATE AND DECELERATION SENSORS
HINT:
- When having replaced the yaw rate sensor, deceleration sensor or/and the ECU, make sure to perform yaw rate and deceleration sensors zero point calibration.
- This operation is also required when the deceleration sensor or yaw rate sensor has been replaced since the calibrated zero point of both sensors will be erased.
NOTE:- While obtaining the zero point, do not give any vibration to the vehicle by tilting, moving or shaking it and keep it in a stationary condition. (Do not start the engine.)
- Be sure to do this on a level surface (within an inclination of 1 %).
- Clear the zero point of the yaw rate and deceleration sensors.
- Shift the shift lever to P range.
- Turn the ignition switch ON in a stationary condition.
- With the ignition switch ON, using SST, repeat a cycle of short and open between terminals Ts and Ei of DLC1 4 times or more within 8 sec. Check that the VSC warning light is lit indicating the recorded zero point is erased.

- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Obtain zero point of the yaw rate sensor.
- Make the terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1 disconnected.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
HINT:
The vehicle should be in a stationary condition with the shift lever in P range.
- Check that the lighted VSC warning light goes off about 15 sec. after the ignition switch is turned ON.
HINT:
Even if the ignition is not turned OFF in step (a)-(4) and remains ON, the yaw rate sensor zero point calibration can be completed. In this case, the VSC warning light is lit about 15 sec. and starts blinking. (Normal code)
- After ensuring that the VSC warning light remains OFF for 2 sec, turn the ignition switch OFF.
HINT:
If the ignition switch is not turned OFF in step (a)-(4), ensure the blinking light for 2 sec. and turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Perform deceleration sensor zero point calibration.NOTE: After step (b) (the yaw rate sensor zero point calibration), the VSC warning light goes off. At this time, if the vehicle is driven without performing step (c) (deceleration sensor zero point calibration), deceleration sensor zero point calibration malfunction will be detected and the VSC warning light will light up. Therefore, perform step (c) right after step (b).
- Using SST, connect the terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1.

- Turn the ignition switch ON.
HINT:
Make the vehicle in a stationary condition with the shift lever in P range.
- After turning the ignition switch ON, check that the VSC warning light is lit for about 4 sec. and then starts quick blinking at 0.13 sec. intervals.
- After ensuring the blinking of the VSC warning light for 2 sec, turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Remove the SST and make the terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1 disconnected.

- Using SST, connect the terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1.
- Procedures for test mode:
