Automatic Transmission Assembly: Removal

  1. SEPARATE BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL 
  2. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the shift lever knob sub-assembly.

    3. Remove the floor shift lever knob sub-assembly.
  3. REMOVE NO. 1 CONSOLE UPPER PANEL GARNISH (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  4. REMOVE NO. 2 CONSOLE UPPER PANEL GARNISH (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  5. REMOVE UPPER CONSOLE PANEL ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  6. REMOVE TRANSFER HIGH AND LOW SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY

    1. Using needle nose pliers, remove the snap ring and pull out the transfer high and low shift lever assembly from the transfer assembly.
  7. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
  8. REMOVE REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER ASSEMBLY 
  9. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACKET 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and front suspension member bracket.
  10. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACKET LH

    1. Remove the 4 bolts and front suspension member bracket LH.
  11. DISCONNECT OXYGEN SENSOR 

    HINT:

    (See REMOVAL )

  12. REMOVE EXHAUST FRONT PIPE ASSEMBLY 

    HINT:

    (See REMOVAL )

  13. REMOVE FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  14. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  15. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 
    1. Remove the drain plug, gasket and drain ATF.
    2. Install a new gasket and drain plug.

      Torque: 28 N*m (285 kgf*cm, 21 ft.*lbf) 

  16. DISCONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE

    1. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 clamps.
    2. Using SST, disconnect the No. 1 oil cooler outlet tube.

    SST 09023-12701 

  17. REMOVE NO. 1 OIL COOLER INLET TUBE

    1. Using SST, disconnect the No. 1 oil cooler inlet tube.

  18. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the nut and clip, disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the transmission control cable bracket.
  19. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY

    1. Support the automatic transmission assembly with a transmission jack.
  20. REMOVE NO. 3 FRAME CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the 4 bolts on the No. 3 frame crossmember sub-assembly.
    2. Remove the 4 nuts, 4 bolts and No. 3 frame crossmember sub-assembly.
  21. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR

    1. Tilt down the transmission.
      NOTE: Take care so that the cooling fan does not come in contact with the fan shroud.
    2. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    3. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
    4. Disconnect the 2 speed sensor connectors.
    5. Disconnect the speedometer sensor connector.
    6. Disconnect the indicator No. 1 switch connector. (Low)
    7. Disconnect the indicator No. 2 switch connector. (Neutral)
    8. Disconnect the indicator No. 3 switch connector. (Diff. lock)
    9. Disconnect the transfer shift actuator connector. (with transfer shift actuator)
  22. SEPARATE TRANSFER BREATHER HOSE SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Separate the transfer breather hose sub-assembly from the transmission assembly.

      HINT:

      The breather hose bracket is tightened together with the transmission housing.

  23. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS

    1. Remove the 3 bolts and wire harness from the transmission and transfer.
    2. Disconnect the wire harness from the transmission assembly.
  24. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER

    1. Remove the bolt and flywheel housing under cover.
  25. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY

    1. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.
    2. Hold the crankshaft pulley nut with a wrench and remove the 6 bolts.
    3. Remove the 10 bolts.
    4. Separate and remove the automatic transmission.
  26. REMOVE NO. 1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET

    1. Remove the 2 bolts and transmission control cable bracket.
  27. REMOVE TRANSFER ASSEMBLY (See  DISASSEMBLY  ) 
  28. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING REAR INSULATOR

    1. Remove the 4 bolts and No. 1 engine mounting rear insulator from the automatic transmission.
  29. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
  30. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
