Steering Column Assembly: Disassembly

NOTE:
When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
- REMOVE NO. 2 DUST COVER LOWER
- Remove the 2 nuts and cover.
- REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
- Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft assembly and main shaft assembly.
- Remove the bolt and intermediate shaft assembly with the upper side No. 2 lower cover.
- Remove the thrust stopper from the main shaft assembly.
- REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
- Widen the claw hung on the bracket upper by approximately 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) using a screwdriver.
- Pull the transponder key amplifier toward the rear of the vehicle with the claw open.NOTE: Take care not to use excessive force to prevent the case from being damaged.
- REMOVE CONNECTOR BRACKET
- Remove the bolt and connector bracket.
- REMOVE NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN PROTECTOR
- Remove the bolt and No. 1 steering column protector.
- REMOVE TURN SIGNAL BRACKET
- Remove the 3 bolts and turn signal bracket.
- REMOVE POWER TILT MOTOR
- Using a hexagon wrench, remove the support stopper bolt.
- Remove the stopper spring and No. 1 stopper.
- Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 2 tilt steering bolts and power tilt motor.
- Using a screwdriver, remove the 2 E-rings.
- Remove the 2 support stopper bolt bushings from the power tilt motor.
- REMOVE NO. 1 TILT STEERING ADJUSTING NUT
- Set SST, a plate washer (36 mm outer diameter) and bolt (6 mm normal diameter, 1.0 mm pitch, 50 mm length), as shown.

- Remove the 2 tilt steering shafts by using the sliding hammer on SST.
- Remove the No. 1 adjusting nut.
- Remove the 2 support stopper bolt bushes from the No. 1 adjusting nut.
- Set SST, a plate washer (36 mm outer diameter) and bolt (6 mm normal diameter, 1.0 mm pitch, 50 mm length), as shown.
- REMOVE POWER TELESCOPIC MOTOR
- Remove the 2 bolts and power telescopic motor.
- Remove the telescopic steering column cable.
- REMOVE COLUMN BRACKET UPPER AND COLUMN CLAMP UPPER
- Remove the column tube stopper.
- Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
- Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
- Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts, column bracket upper and column clamp upper.
- Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 2 telescopic lever lock bolts.
- Remove the 2 telescopic steering wedge lock springs, 2 steering lock wedges and column bracket upper and column clamp upper.
- REMOVE COLUMN TUBE SUPPORT
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the column tube support with tube attachment.
- Remove the tube attachment from the column tube support.
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ENERGY ABSORBING PLATE
- Using pliers, remove the 2 energy absorbing clips.
- Remove the 2 energy absorbing plates and 2 energy absorbing guides.
- REMOVE TELESCOPIC STEERING SLIDER SUPPORT
- Remove the 2 bolts and telescopic steering slider support.
- REMOVE TELESCOPIC STEERING BUSH
- REMOVE TELESCOPIC STEERING SLIDER
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET SPACER
- REMOVE TELESCOPIC STEERING SCREW
- Remove the nut, 4 energy absorber cushions, 2 bearings and telescopic steering screw.
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN TUBE UPPER WITH MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY
- Using a screwdriver, remove the lower side snap ring from the main shaft.
- Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 2 tilt steering bolts and the column tube upper with the main shaft.
- Remove the column tube upper from the break away bracket.
- Remove the 2 support stopper bolt bushes from the column tube upper.
- Remove the 3 bushes from the break away bracket.
- REMOVE STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY
- Using SST, compress the compression spring.
SST 09950-40011 (09958-04011)
NOTE: Do not bend the universal joint of the shaft assembly more than 20°. - Using a snap ring expander, remove the upper side snap ring.
- Remove the main shaft from the column upper tube.
- Remove the compression spring and bearing thrust collar from the main shaft.
- Using SST, compress the compression spring.
