Automatic Transmission Assembly: Removal

  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
  2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  3. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  4. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER AIR GUIDE BRACKET 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and bracket.
  5. DRAIN COOLANT  (See REPLACEMENT )
  6. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 
    1. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the ATF.
    2. Install a new gasket and the drain plug.

      Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

  7. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the propeller shaft with center bearing (See REMOVAL ).
  8. REMOVE COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL  (See REMOVAL )
  9. REMOVE ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH  (See REMOVAL )
  10. REMOVE ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER RH  (See REMOVAL )
  11. REMOVE V-BANK COVER  (See REMOVAL )
  12. DISCONNECT NO. 2 RELAY BLOCK  (See REMOVAL )
  13. REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH  (See REMOVAL )
  14. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )
  15. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER 
    1. Remove the flywheel housing side cover from the engine assembly.

  16. REMOVE DRIVE PLATE & TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SETTING BOLT 
    1. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.
    2. Hold the crankshaft pulley nut with a wrench and remove the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts.
  17. DISCONNECT FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Move the shift lever to the N position.

    2. Remove the nut, and disconnect the floor shift gear shifting rod.

  18. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Support the automatic transmission assembly with a transmission jack.

  19. REMOVE ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts, and disconnect the engine rear mounting member from the body.

    2. Remove the 4 nuts and engine rear mounting member from the automatic transmission assembly.

  20. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR 
    1. Remove the bolt and disconnect the ground wire.

    2. Tilt down the automatic transmission assembly.

    3. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, and 2 transmission revolution sensor connectors.

      HINT:

      Detach the claw, press down the lever, and then disconnect the transmission wire connector.

    4. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the wire harness clamps from the automatic transmission assembly.

  21. DISCONNECT WATER BY-PASS HOSE 
    1. Remove the bolt and water by-pass hose clamp.
    2. Disconnect the 2 water by-pass hoses from the transmission oil cooler.
      NOTE: Use a container to catch any coolant which flows out of the water by-pass hoses.

  22. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 9 bolts and automatic transmission.
      NOTE: Do not use excess force to pry on the transmission assembly.

  23. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and rear engine mounting insulator from the automatic transmission assembly.

  24. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH 
    1. Remove the nut and transmission control shaft lever from the park/neutral position switch.

  25. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and transmission oil cooler and spacer from the automatic transmission assembly.

    2. Remove the 4 O-rings from the spacer.

  26. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Put matchmarks on the torque converter and transmission case.
    2. Remove the torque converter from the automatic transmission assembly.
  27. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY  (See TORQUE CONVERTER AND DRIVE PLATE  )
