Engine Assembly: Removal

  1. DISCHARGE FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
  3. REMOVE HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and hood sub-assembly.
  4. REMOVE V-BANK COVER 
    1. Remove the 2 nuts and V-bank cover.
  5. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR CLEANER INLET (See  REMOVAL   ) 
  6. REMOVE INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR PIPE 
    1. Disconnect the air hose and No. 1 ventilation hose.

    2. Loosen the 2 hose clamps. Then remove the bolt and intake air connector pipe.

  7. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the MAF meter connector and clamp.
    2. Remove the 3 bolts and air cleaner assembly.

  8. REMOVE ECM COVER 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and cover.

  9. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  10. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER RH 
  11. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  12. DRAIN ENGINE OIL 
  13. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT (See  COOLANT  ) 
  14. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  15. DISCONNECT NO. 1 RADIATOR HOSE (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  16. DISCONNECT NO. 2 RADIATOR HOSE (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  17. DISCONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER INLET TUBE (See  DISASSEMBLY  ) 
  18. DISCONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE (See  DISASSEMBLY  ) 
  19. REMOVE RADIATOR ASSEMBLY (See  DISASSEMBLY  ) 
  20. DISCONNECT NO. 2 FUEL PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using SST, disconnect the fuel pipe.

      SST 09023-38401 

  21. REMOVE FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT (See  REMOVAL   ) 
  22. DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE 
    1. Disconnect the engine wire from the ECM box.
    2. Remove the nut, and disconnect the wire from the generator.
    3. Disconnect the 2 wires from the 2 wire clamps on the generator.
    4. Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the PS oil hose from the No. 1 oil pan.
    5. Remove the bolt, and disconnect the ground strap from the body.

  23. DISCONNECT NO. 5 AIR HOSE 
  24. DISCONNECT NO. 2 FUEL VAPOR FEED HOSE 
  25. DISCONNECT HEATER WATER INLET HOSE A 
    1. Remove the clamp and disconnect the heater water inlet hose A.
  26. DISCONNECT HEATER WATER OUTLET HOSE A (FROM HEATER UNIT) 
    1. Remove the clamp and disconnect the heater water outlet hose A.
  27. DISCONNECT VANE PUMP OIL RESERVOIR ASSEMBLY 
  28. DISCONNECT VANE PUMP ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the 2 PS air hoses.
    2. Remove the 2 screws and RH engine under cover.
    3. Disconnect the PS oil pressure switch connector.
    4. Remove the 2 bolts and nut, and disconnect the vane pump from the engine.
    5. Support the vane pump securely.
  29. DISCONNECT COOLER COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the compressor connector.
    2. Disconnect the wire clamp from the wire bracket on the compressor.
    3. Remove the bolt, nut and stay.
    4. Remove the bolt, and disconnect the wire bracket from the compressor.
    5. Remove the bolt, and disconnect the compressor from the engine.
    6. Support the cooler compressor securely.
  30. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR BRACE CENTER 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and brace center.

  31. REMOVE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (for Bank 1 Sensor 2) (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  32. REMOVE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (for Bank 2 Sensor 2) (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  33. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 6 nuts, 6 bolts, exhaust pipe and 3 gaskets.

  34. REMOVE CENTER EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 4 nuts, 4 bolts, 2 rings, exhaust pipe and 2 gaskets.

  35. REMOVE NO. 1 EXHAUST PIPE SUPPORT BRACKET 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and bracket.

  36. REMOVE CATALYST CONVERTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 6 nuts, 2 converters and 2 gaskets.
  37. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE SUB-ASSEMBLY RH 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts, 2 nuts and front suspension member brace.

  38. REMOVE NO. 1 FRONT FLOOR HEAT INSULATOR 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and insulator.

  39. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE CABLE HEAT INSULATOR

    1. Remove the 4 bolts and insulator.
  40. REMOVE PROPELLER WITH CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  41. REMOVE FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the nut and disconnect the floor shift gear shifting rod.

  42. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Check the steering wheel at the center position.
    2. Remove the 2 bolts and sliding yoke from the steering intermediate shaft.

  43. DISCONNECT POWER STEERING GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the bolt, and disconnect the 2 PS oil tubes from the front frame.
    2. Remove the 4 bolts, and disconnect the PS gear housing from the front frame.
    3. Suspend the PS gear housing securely.

  44. REMOVE ENGINE WITH TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the nut and No. 1 V-bank cover bracket from the No. 2 engine hanger.
    2. Attach the engine chain hoist to the engine hangers.

    3. Remove the 2 hole plugs.
    4. Remove the 4 nuts holding the engine mounting insulator to the front suspension crossmember.
    5. Remove the 4 bolts, 4 nuts and engine rear mounting member.

    6. Lift the engine out of the vehicle slowly and carefully.

      HINT:

      Make sure the engine is clear of all wiring, houses and cables.

    7. Place the engine and transmission assembly onto a stand.
  45. REMOVE OIL COOLER TUBE 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and 3 clamps.

    2. Loosen the union nut and disconnect the oil cooler inlet tube.

    3. Loosen the union nut and disconnect the oil cooler outlet tube.
  46. DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE 
    1. Disconnect the engine wire from the transmission.
      1. Disconnect the VSV connector.
      2. Disconnect the engine wire from the 3 wire clamps.
      3. Disconnect the oil level sensor connector.

  47. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Remove the 5 bolts and wire harness clamps.
    2. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    3. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
    4. Disconnect the 2 speed sensor connectors.
    5. Disconnect the wire harness from the automatic transmission.

  48. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and flywheel housing under cover.

  49. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Turn the crankshaft damper bolt to gain access to each bolt.
    2. Hold the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench and remove the 6 bolts.

    3. Remove the 9 bolts.
    4. Remove the transmission together with the torque converter clutch from the engine.
  50. REMOVE DRIVE PLATE & RING GEAR SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 8 bolts, rear spacer, ring gear and front spacer.

  51. INSTALL ENGINE STAND 
  52. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the connector and wire.
    2. Disconnect the water bypass hose.
    3. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts, throttle body and gasket.
  53. REMOVE INTAKE MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the purge VSV connector.
    2. Disconnect the purge hose from the purge VSV.
    3. Remove the bolt, and disconnect the purge VSV from the upper intake manifold.
    4. Remove the bolt and No. 2 V-bank cover bracket.
    5. Remove the bolt and No. 3 V-bank cover bracket.

    6. Disconnect the ACIS VSV connector.
    7. Remove the bolt and No. 1 V-bank cover bracket.
    8. Remove the bolt and No. 4 V-bank cover bracket.

    9. Remove the 4 bolts, and disconnect the engine wire protector (LH side) from the upper intake manifold and camshaft bearing cap.
    10. Disconnect the 2 wire clamps on the engine wire (RH side) from the brackets on the RH delivery pipe.
    11. Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the engine wire protector (rear side) from the rear water bypass joint and RH cylinder head.

    12. Disconnect the 8 injector connectors.
    13. Remove the 6 bolts, 4 nuts, intake manifold and 2 gaskets.

  54. INSPECT INTAKE MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY 
    1. Upper intake manifold:

      Using a precision straightedge and feeler gauge, measure the surface contacting the cylinder head for warpage.

      Maximum warpage: 0.15 mm (0.0059 in.) 

      If the warpage is greater than the maximum, replace the manifold.

    2. Lower intake manifold:

      Using a precision straightedge and feeler gauge, measure the surface contacting the cylinder head for warpage.

      Maximum warpage: 0.15 mm (0.0059 in.) 

      If the warpage is greater than the maximum, replace the manifold.

  55. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY (See  DISASSEMBLY  ) 
  56. REMOVE GENERATOR ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  57. REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH (See  REMOVAL   ) 
  58. REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (See  REMOVAL   ) 
  59. REMOVE WATER INLET HOUSING (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  60. REMOVE FRONT WATER BYPASS JOINT 
    1. Disconnect the ECT sensor connector.
    2. Remove the 4 nuts, water bypass joint and 2 gaskets.

  61. REMOVE REAR WATER BYPASS JOINT 
    1. Disconnect the heater inlet hose from the water bypass joint.
    2. Remove the 4 nuts, water bypass joint and 2 gaskets.
  62. REMOVE WATER BYPASS PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the heater outlet hose from the water bypass pipe.
    2. Disconnect the wire clamp (for knock sensor 1,2) from the bracket of the water bypass pipe.
    3. Remove the bolt.
    4. Pull out the water bypass pipe from the water pump.
    5. Remove the O-ring from the water bypass pipe.

  63. REMOVE OIL DIPSTICK AND GUIDE (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  64. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY RH 
    1. Disconnect the sensor connector.
    2. Remove the bolt and oil control valve.
  65. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY LH 
    1. Disconnect the sensor connector.
    2. Remove the bolt and oil control valve.
  66. REMOVE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR 
    1. Disconnect the sensor connector.
    2. Remove the bolt and sensor.
  67. REMOVE WT SENSOR 
    1. Disconnect the 2 sensor connectors.
    2. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 sensors.
  68. REMOVE KNOCK SENSOR

    1. Disconnect the 2 sensor connectors.
    2. Remove the 2 nuts and 2 knock sensors.
  69. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE HANGER 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and engine hanger.
  70. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE HANGER 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and engine hanger.
  71. REMOVE IGNITION COIL 
    1. Remove the 8 bolts and 8 ignition coils.
  72. REMOVE OIL FILTER BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  73. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  74. REMOVE ENGINE OIL LEVEL SENSOR (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  75. REMOVE ENGINE WIRE 
  76. REMOVE NO. 1 EXHAUST MANIFOLD HEAT INSULATOR 
  77. REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY RH 
    1. Remove the 8 nuts, exhaust manifold and gasket.

  78. INSPECT EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY RH

    1. Remove the 4 bolts and heat insulator.
  80. REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH 
    1. Remove the 8 nuts, exhaust manifold and gasket.

  84. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET FRONT LH 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and mounting bracket.
