Engine Assembly: Removal

- DISCHARGE FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE (See REMOVAL )
- DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
- REMOVE HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Remove the 4 bolts and hood sub-assembly.
- REMOVE V-BANK COVER
- Remove the 2 nuts and V-bank cover.
- REMOVE NO. 1 AIR CLEANER INLET (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR PIPE
- Disconnect the air hose and No. 1 ventilation hose.
- Loosen the 2 hose clamps. Then remove the bolt and intake air connector pipe.
- REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
- Disconnect the MAF meter connector and clamp.
- Remove the 3 bolts and air cleaner assembly.
- REMOVE ECM COVER
- Remove the 3 bolts and cover.
- REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
- REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER RH
- REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER
- DRAIN ENGINE OIL
- DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT (See COOLANT )
- DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (See REMOVAL )
- DISCONNECT NO. 1 RADIATOR HOSE (See REMOVAL )
- DISCONNECT NO. 2 RADIATOR HOSE (See REMOVAL )
- DISCONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER INLET TUBE (See DISASSEMBLY )
- DISCONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE (See DISASSEMBLY )
- REMOVE RADIATOR ASSEMBLY (See DISASSEMBLY )
- DISCONNECT NO. 2 FUEL PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Using SST, disconnect the fuel pipe.
SST 09023-38401
- Using SST, disconnect the fuel pipe.
- REMOVE FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT (See REMOVAL )
- DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE
- Disconnect the engine wire from the ECM box.
- Remove the nut, and disconnect the wire from the generator.
- Disconnect the 2 wires from the 2 wire clamps on the generator.
- Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the PS oil hose from the No. 1 oil pan.
- Remove the bolt, and disconnect the ground strap from the body.
- DISCONNECT NO. 5 AIR HOSE
- DISCONNECT NO. 2 FUEL VAPOR FEED HOSE
- DISCONNECT HEATER WATER INLET HOSE A
- Remove the clamp and disconnect the heater water inlet hose A.
- DISCONNECT HEATER WATER OUTLET HOSE A (FROM HEATER UNIT)
- Remove the clamp and disconnect the heater water outlet hose A.
- DISCONNECT VANE PUMP OIL RESERVOIR ASSEMBLY
- DISCONNECT VANE PUMP ASSEMBLY
- Disconnect the 2 PS air hoses.
- Remove the 2 screws and RH engine under cover.
- Disconnect the PS oil pressure switch connector.
- Remove the 2 bolts and nut, and disconnect the vane pump from the engine.
- Support the vane pump securely.
- DISCONNECT COOLER COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY
- Disconnect the compressor connector.
- Disconnect the wire clamp from the wire bracket on the compressor.
- Remove the bolt, nut and stay.
- Remove the bolt, and disconnect the wire bracket from the compressor.
- Remove the bolt, and disconnect the compressor from the engine.
- Support the cooler compressor securely.
- REMOVE FRONT FLOOR BRACE CENTER
- Remove the 4 bolts and brace center.
- REMOVE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (for Bank 1 Sensor 2) (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (for Bank 2 Sensor 2) (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
- Remove the 6 nuts, 6 bolts, exhaust pipe and 3 gaskets.
- REMOVE CENTER EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
- Remove the 4 nuts, 4 bolts, 2 rings, exhaust pipe and 2 gaskets.
- REMOVE NO. 1 EXHAUST PIPE SUPPORT BRACKET
- Remove the 2 bolts and bracket.
- REMOVE CATALYST CONVERTER ASSEMBLY
- Remove the 6 nuts, 2 converters and 2 gaskets.
- REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
- Remove the 4 bolts, 2 nuts and front suspension member brace.
- REMOVE NO. 1 FRONT FLOOR HEAT INSULATOR
- Remove the 4 bolts and insulator.
- REMOVE PARKING BRAKE CABLE HEAT INSULATOR

- Remove the 4 bolts and insulator.
- REMOVE PROPELLER WITH CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Remove the nut and disconnect the floor shift gear shifting rod.
- REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Check the steering wheel at the center position.
- Remove the 2 bolts and sliding yoke from the steering intermediate shaft.
- DISCONNECT POWER STEERING GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY
- Remove the bolt, and disconnect the 2 PS oil tubes from the front frame.
- Remove the 4 bolts, and disconnect the PS gear housing from the front frame.
- Suspend the PS gear housing securely.
- REMOVE ENGINE WITH TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY
- Remove the nut and No. 1 V-bank cover bracket from the No. 2 engine hanger.
- Attach the engine chain hoist to the engine hangers.
- Remove the 2 hole plugs.
- Remove the 4 nuts holding the engine mounting insulator to the front suspension crossmember.
- Remove the 4 bolts, 4 nuts and engine rear mounting member.
- Lift the engine out of the vehicle slowly and carefully.
HINT:
Make sure the engine is clear of all wiring, houses and cables.
- Place the engine and transmission assembly onto a stand.
- REMOVE OIL COOLER TUBE
- Remove the 3 bolts and 3 clamps.
- Loosen the union nut and disconnect the oil cooler inlet tube.
- Loosen the union nut and disconnect the oil cooler outlet tube.
- DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE
- Disconnect the engine wire from the transmission.
- Disconnect the VSV connector.
- Disconnect the engine wire from the 3 wire clamps.
- Disconnect the oil level sensor connector.
- Disconnect the engine wire from the transmission.
- DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS
- Remove the 5 bolts and wire harness clamps.
- Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
- Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
- Disconnect the 2 speed sensor connectors.
- Disconnect the wire harness from the automatic transmission.
- REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER
- Remove the 2 bolts and flywheel housing under cover.
- REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY
- Turn the crankshaft damper bolt to gain access to each bolt.
- Hold the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench and remove the 6 bolts.
- Remove the 9 bolts.
- Remove the transmission together with the torque converter clutch from the engine.
- REMOVE DRIVE PLATE & RING GEAR SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Remove the 8 bolts, rear spacer, ring gear and front spacer.
- INSTALL ENGINE STAND
- REMOVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY
- Disconnect the connector and wire.
- Disconnect the water bypass hose.
- Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts, throttle body and gasket.
- REMOVE INTAKE MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY
- Disconnect the purge VSV connector.
- Disconnect the purge hose from the purge VSV.
- Remove the bolt, and disconnect the purge VSV from the upper intake manifold.
- Remove the bolt and No. 2 V-bank cover bracket.
- Remove the bolt and No. 3 V-bank cover bracket.
- Disconnect the ACIS VSV connector.
- Remove the bolt and No. 1 V-bank cover bracket.
- Remove the bolt and No. 4 V-bank cover bracket.
- Remove the 4 bolts, and disconnect the engine wire protector (LH side) from the upper intake manifold and camshaft bearing cap.
- Disconnect the 2 wire clamps on the engine wire (RH side) from the brackets on the RH delivery pipe.
- Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the engine wire protector (rear side) from the rear water bypass joint and RH cylinder head.
- Disconnect the 8 injector connectors.
- Remove the 6 bolts, 4 nuts, intake manifold and 2 gaskets.
- INSPECT INTAKE MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY
- Upper intake manifold:
Using a precision straightedge and feeler gauge, measure the surface contacting the cylinder head for warpage.
Maximum warpage: 0.15 mm (0.0059 in.)
If the warpage is greater than the maximum, replace the manifold.
- Lower intake manifold:
Using a precision straightedge and feeler gauge, measure the surface contacting the cylinder head for warpage.
Maximum warpage: 0.15 mm (0.0059 in.)
If the warpage is greater than the maximum, replace the manifold.
- Upper intake manifold:
- REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY (See DISASSEMBLY )
- REMOVE GENERATOR ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE WATER INLET HOUSING (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE FRONT WATER BYPASS JOINT
- Disconnect the ECT sensor connector.
- Remove the 4 nuts, water bypass joint and 2 gaskets.
- REMOVE REAR WATER BYPASS JOINT
- Disconnect the heater inlet hose from the water bypass joint.
- Remove the 4 nuts, water bypass joint and 2 gaskets.
- REMOVE WATER BYPASS PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Disconnect the heater outlet hose from the water bypass pipe.
- Disconnect the wire clamp (for knock sensor 1,2) from the bracket of the water bypass pipe.
- Remove the bolt.
- Pull out the water bypass pipe from the water pump.
- Remove the O-ring from the water bypass pipe.
- REMOVE OIL DIPSTICK AND GUIDE (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY RH
- Disconnect the sensor connector.
- Remove the bolt and oil control valve.
- REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY LH
- Disconnect the sensor connector.
- Remove the bolt and oil control valve.
- REMOVE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
- Disconnect the sensor connector.
- Remove the bolt and sensor.
- REMOVE WT SENSOR
- Disconnect the 2 sensor connectors.
- Remove the 2 bolts and 2 sensors.
- REMOVE KNOCK SENSOR
- Disconnect the 2 sensor connectors.
- Remove the 2 nuts and 2 knock sensors.
- REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE HANGER
- Remove the 2 bolts and engine hanger.
- REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE HANGER
- Remove the 2 bolts and engine hanger.
- REMOVE IGNITION COIL
- Remove the 8 bolts and 8 ignition coils.
- REMOVE OIL FILTER BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE ENGINE OIL LEVEL SENSOR (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE ENGINE WIRE
- REMOVE NO. 1 EXHAUST MANIFOLD HEAT INSULATOR
- REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
- Remove the 8 nuts, exhaust manifold and gasket.
- INSPECT EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
- Using a precision straightedge and feeler gauge, measure the surface contacting the cylinder head for warpage.
Maximum warpage: 0.50 mm (0.0197 in.)
If the warpage is greater than the maximum, replace the manifold.
- Using a precision straightedge and feeler gauge, measure the surface contacting the cylinder head for warpage.
- REMOVE NO. 2 EXHAUST MANIFOLD HEAT INSULATOR
- Remove the 4 bolts and heat insulator.
- REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
- Remove the 8 nuts, exhaust manifold and gasket.
- INSPECT EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
- Using a precision straightedge and feeler gauge, measure the surface contacting the cylinder head for warpage.
Maximum warpage: 0.50 mm (0.0197 in.)
If the warpage is greater than the maximum, replace the manifold.
- Using a precision straightedge and feeler gauge, measure the surface contacting the cylinder head for warpage.
- REMOVE NO. 2 WIRING HARNESS HEAT INSULATOR
- REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET FRONT RH
- Remove the 4 bolts and mounting bracket.
- REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET FRONT LH
- Remove the 4 bolts and mounting bracket.
