      4. Ground the spark plug.
      5. Visually check that sparks occur while the engine is being cranked.
        NOTE:
        • Be sure to ground the spark plug when checking.
        • Replace the ignition coil assembly if it receives an impact.
        • Do not crank the engine for more than 2 seconds.
    3. Check that the wire harness side connector of the ignition coil assembly with igniter is securely connected.
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      NG Connect securely
      OK Go to next step
    4. Perform a spark test on each ignition coil assembly with igniter.

      HINT:

Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the ignition coil assembly.

      Refer to INITIALIZATION [10/2015 - 09/2018] or refer to INITIALIZATION [09/2018 - ]

      1. If there is a cylinder where sparks do not occur, replace its ignition coil assembly with the ignition coil assembly of a cylinder where sparks occur normally.
      2. Crank the engine and visually check that sparks occur at the cylinder with the normally operating ignition coil assembly.
        RESULT

        Result Proceed to
OK Replace ignition coil assembly with igniter
        NG Go to next step
    5. Inspect the spark plug.

      HINT:

Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the spark plug.

      Refer to INITIALIZATION [10/2015 - 09/2018] or refer to INITIALIZATION [09/2018 - ]

      1. Replace the spark plug with a normal one.
      2. Perform spark test again.
        RESULT

        Result Proceed to
        OK Replace spark plug
        NG Go to next step
    6. Check power supply to ignition coil assembly with igniter.
      1. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
      2. Check that there is battery voltage at the ignition coil positive (+) terminal.
        RESULT

        Result Proceed to
NG Check wiring between engine switch and ignition coil assembly with igniter
        OK Go to next step
    7. Check the VVT sensor for intake side.

Refer to DTC P0340-11: Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Bank 1 or Single Sensor Circuit Short to Ground; DTC P034015: Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Bank 1 or Single Sensor Circuit Short to Battery or Open; DTC P034031: Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Bank 1 or Single Sensor No Signal; DTC P034511: Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Bank 2 Circuit Short to Ground; DTC P034515: Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Bank 2 Circuit Short to Battery or Open; DTC P034531: Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Bank 2 No Signal [10/2015 - ]

    8. Check the VVT sensor for exhaust side.

Refer to DTC P0365-11: Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Bank 1 Circuit Short to Ground; DTC P036515: Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Bank 1 Circuit Short to Battery or Open; DTC P03652A: Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Bank 1 Signal Stuck in Range; DTC P036531: Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Bank 1 No Signal; DTC P039011: Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Bank 2 Circuit Short to Ground; DTC P039015: Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Bank 2 Circuit Short to Battery or Open; DTC P039031: Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Bank 2 No Signal [10/2015 - ]

    9. Install the 6 spark plugs.

      Refer to INSTALLATION [10/2015 - ]

    10. Connect the 4 connectors.
  2. INSPECT SPARK PLUG

    HINT:

Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the spark plug.

    Refer to INITIALIZATION [10/2015 - 09/2018] or refer to INITIALIZATION [09/2018 - ]

    1. Check the electrode.
      1. Using a megohmmeter, measure the insulation resistance.

        *a Body Ground

        Standard Insulation Resistance

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
Spark plug (terminal part) - Body ground Always 10 MΩ or higher

If a megohmmeter is not available, perform the following simple inspection.

    2. Alternative inspection method:
      1. Quickly accelerate the engine to 4000 rpm 5 times.
      2. Remove the spark plug.
      3. Visually check the spark plug.

If the electrode is dry, the spark plug is functioning properly. If the electrode is damp, proceed to the next step.

    3. Check the spark plug for any damage on its threads and insulator.

      HINT:

Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the spark plug.

      Refer to INITIALIZATION [10/2015 - 09/2018] or refer to INITIALIZATION [09/2018 - ]

If there is damage, replace the spark plug. If not, reinstall the spark plug.
