Overhaul - AXOD: Description
The AXOD (Automatic Overdrive Transaxle) combines an automatic transaxle and differential into a single unit designed for front wheel drive vehicles. The transaxle is a fully automatic unit with 4 forward speeds, one reverse, neutral and park.
The AXOD has 2 planetary gear sets and a combination planetary/differential gear set. Four multiple plate clutches, 2 band assemblies, and 2 roller (one-way) clutches act as friction elements for proper operation of the planetary gear sets.
A lock-up torque converter couples the engine output to the planetary gears and overdrive unit. This is done by a chain which connects the drive and driven sprockets. The converter lock-up is controlled through the EEC-IV system. A piston plate clutch, inside converter, is activated by the computer and valve body.
The converter clutch applies at approximately 27 MPH in 3rd gear and approximately 35 MPH in 4th gear (Overdrive). It cannot apply in 1st or 2nd gear. Engagement is prevented when coolant temperature is below 75°F (24°C), barometric pressure is below 20 in. Hg during 4-3 downshifts, during 2-3 upshifts, or when service brakes are applied.
