Power Steering Gear: Disassembly

  1. Remove the steering gear. See POWER STEERING GEAR . Secure the steering gear in a soft jaw vise with the indexing flat pointed down. See Fig 1. Rotate the power steering gear input shaft and control from stop to stop and then center the gear. See Fig 2. Remove the steering gear sector shaft housing cover bolts. See Fig 3.

  2. Tap on the lower end of the steering gear sector shaft. See Fig 4. Remove the steering gear sector shaft. See Fig 5.

  3. Remove the locking nut from the steering gear sector shaft adjustment screw. See Fig 6. Hold the steering gear sector shaft and rotate the steering gear sector shaft housing cover counterclockwise and remove the steering gear sector shaft housing cover. See Fig 7.

  4. Remove the valve housing bolts and the identification tag. See Fig 8. Remove the valve housing and piston assembly. See Fig 9.

  5. Remove and discard the valve housing gasket. See Fig 10. Remove the steering gear ball return guide clamp bolts, guide clamp and guide. Rotate the piston over a container to collect the 28 ball bearings. See Fig 11.

  6. Remove the input shaft valve and housing assembly from the piston. See Fig 12. Remove and discard the Teflon® seal. See Fig 13.

  7. Install the valve housing in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture (T57L-500-B). Loosen the steering gear Allen head race lock nut. See Fig 14. Use Adjuster and Locknut Wrench to remove the power steering gear race nut. See Fig 15.

  8. Remove the power steering gear input shaft and control from the valve housing. See Fig 16.

  9. Rotate the valve housing with bench mounted holding fixture (T57L-500-B). Use Puller to remove the dust seal from the valve housing. See Fig 17. Remove the input shaft snap ring from the valve housing. See Fig 18.

  10. NOTE: The steering gear sector shaft bearing is not replaceable.

  11. Rotate the valve housing with bench mounted holding fixture and use Input Shaft Bearing Seal Tool (T65P-3524-A) to remove the bearing and steering gear sector shaft housing oil seal. See Fig 19. Remove valve housing from bench mounted holding fixture. Install the steering gear housing in bench mounted holding fixture and remove the steering gear sector shaft dust seal from the sector shaft seal bore. See Fig 20.
  12. Remove the snap ring and spacer. Fig 21. Use Puller to remove the sector shaft seal. See Fig 22.
