Test F: Incorrect Key Code From Ignition Key Transponder

NOTE: Large metallic objects on the same key ring with PATS ignition key may cause vehicle starting problems and record DTCs under certain conditions. If a fault cannot be identified, examine key ring for such objects. If objects are found that could interfere with PATS operation, turn ignition switch to LOCK position and restart engine with all metallic objects held away from ignition key.
  1. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester or equivalent scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Retrieve instrument cluster DTCs. If DTC B1601 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1601 is not retrieved, system is okay. Check all encoded keys to ensure that they are programmed.
  2. Using NGS tester, monitor PID NUMKEYS. If PID NUMKEYS display any number other than "8", go to next step. If PID NUMKEYS display is "8", erase and reprogram all keys. See ERASE ALL KEYS & PROGRAM 2 KEYS  under PROGRAMMING.
  3. Verify that there are at least 2 programmed encoded keys available. If there are at least 2 programmed encoded keys available, go to next step. If there are not at least 2 programmed encoded keys available, cut and program NEW key(s). See ERASE ALL KEYS & PROGRAM 2 KEYS  under PROGRAMMING, then proceed to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Start vehicle with first encoded key. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Start vehicle with second encoded key. If vehicle starts with both keys, system is okay. If vehicle does not start with both keys, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition to RUN position. Using NGS tester, retrieve and record instrument cluster continuous DTCs. Clear continuous DTCs. Perform instrument cluster on-demand self-test using both keys used in step 4)  . If DTC B1601 is not retrieved, system is okay. If other DTCs are retrieved perform appropriate test. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DTC INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC B1601 is retrieved, replace instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - EXPEDITION, F150/F250 LIGHT-DUTY & NAVIGATOR article. Cycle ignition switch from LOCK to RUN positions using 2 encoded keys.
