Steering Column: Disassembly
- Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION .
- Remove the steering column. Refer to STEERING COLUMN .
- Remove the steering column upper bearing retainer.
- Rotate 90 degrees counterclockwise and remove the steering column lock housing bearing.
- Note the position of the key hole and remove the steering column lock gear.
- Remove the electronic steering sensor.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Remove the screws.
- Remove the shock absorber electronic steering sensor.
- Remove the sensor ring.
- Remove the steering column lower bearing spring.
- Remove the sensor ring.
- Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring from the steering column shaft.
- Remove the lock cylinder housing screws.
- Remove the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft from the steering actuator housing.
- Pry up on the steering column lock left hand levers using the shop fabricated tool.
- Remove the steering column position spring.
- Remove the bearing retainer snap ring.
- Remove the steering column upper bearing spring.
- Remove the steering column bearing sleeve.
- Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
- Slide the steering column shaft in toward the steering column lock cylinder housing, then out.
- Slide the steering column bearing tolerance ring off the steering column shaft.
- Remove the steering column bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing.
- Remove the steering column bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing.
- If equipped with an automatic parking brake release switch, remove the switch and the brake shift interlock solenoid.
- Remove the brake shift interlock solenoid.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the brake shift interlock solenoid.
- Remove the shift tube.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the clamps.
- Remove the shift tube.
- Remove the transmission selector lever arm and support (7302).
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the transmission selector lever arm and support.
- Remove the gearshift selector tube spring.
- Drive out the gearshift lever pin from the shift tube.
- Remove the gearshift lever.
- Remove the column shift selector lever plunger.
- If bent, install a new column shift selector lever plunger.
- Remove the gearshift lever socket bushings and the transmission control selector lever spring clip.
- Remove the ignition switch.
- Remove the screws.
- Remove the ignition switch.
- Remove the lower steering column bearing.
- Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.
- Remove the three bolts.
- Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.
- Remove the steering column lock pawl.
- Drive out the steering column lock lever pin.
- Remove the steering column lock pawl.
- Remove the upper steering column lock actuator and the lower steering column lock actuator.
