Description & Operation: Introduction

The 5R55N is an electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission. This transmission has the following features: a 4 element torque converter with TCC, 3 compound planetary gear sets, 3 bands, 4 multi-plate clutches and 3 one-way clutches. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls TCC using a pulse-width modulated TCC solenoid.

The 5R55N uses 3 Pressure Control (PC) solenoids (PC-A, PC-B and PC-C), 4 Shift Solenoids (SSA, SSB, SSC and SSD), and a Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoids to control gear selection, shift feel and TCC apply and are operated by EEC-V system.
